This position is 8.0 hours per day for 260 days and the hours are 6:30 am -3:00 pm

NCSD offers new classified employees previous experience credit as follows for verified and approved experience:

0-3 Years = Step 1 ($22.24)

4-6 Years = Step 4 ($23.38)

7-10 Years = Step 6 ($24.18)

11-15 Years = Step 8 ($25.03)

Purpose Statement

The job of Head Custodian Middle Level (JC667) is done for the purpose of coordinating the custodial and maintenance services; coordinating the building and grounds maintenance needs with central maintenance and custodial personnel; assisting with the overseeing and support of assigned personnel in the performance of their job functions; and serving on assigned school's leadership team.

This job reports to the Administrator, or Administrative Manager

Essential Functions
  • Assists in a variety of training and drills with students and staff (e.g. fire, intruder, earthquake, health, and safety, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that emergency procedures are in order, alarm systems are operational, and/or established procedures are effective.
  • Assists in supervision of assigned staff and areas, under the direction of administrative personnel (e.g. hiring, evaluating, assisting with employee performance evaluations, terminating, scheduling and coordinating/reviewing activities, professional development/training, etc.) for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the workforce, meeting legal, safety, and regulatory requirements and department/district objectives, and ensuring the provision of excellent customer service.
  • Attends meetings and in-service training (e.g. crisis management, custodial training, compliance training, equipment training, cleaning procedures, grounds management responsibilities, safety data sheets, first aide, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and conveying information on new and/or improved procedures.
  • Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds using district custodial guidelines, district custodial resources, and grounds management plan for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Communicates issues about safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities administrative and other personnel for the purpose of providing information, obtaining repairs, ensuring safety and/or scheduling special cleaning.
  • Consults with administrative personnel for the purpose of planning, prioritizing, and scheduling custodial activities and achieving site maintenance objectives.
  • Coordinates arrangements for schools and special events (e.g. rooms, furniture, and equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the provision of adequate facilities, materials, and equipment for meetings, classroom activities and events.
  • Determines the type of materials, equipment, supplies to be used or purchased (e.g. procures needed items, order supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed to complete projects and properly maintain facilities.
  • Develops and monitors cleaning schedules in coordination with administrative personnel for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Estimates time and material costs for the purpose of providing necessary information for making decisions and/or take appropriate action.
  • Facilitates assigned custodial staff training on district and/or manufacturer personal protection equipment requirements (PPE), lockout/tag-out protocols, safety data sheet procedures training for the purpose of ensuring employees work in a safe environment.
  • Facilitates meetings and makes recommendations (e.g. member of building leadership team, improvements to assigned facilities, etc.) for the purpose of delivering services in conformance with established guidelines and District objectives.
  • Inspects school or district facilities (e.g. buildings, grounds, playground equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying/reporting necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  • Maintains manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. inspection records, time sheets, work orders and requisitions, supplies, chemical storage, hazardous waste, crisis management data, key controls, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and ensuring an up-to-date reference.
  • Maintains and orders equipment, supplies, and materials for the purpose of maintaining the availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently.
  • Opens and/or secures facilities, as directed, (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flag, lock doors, turn off lights, taking down flags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy and/or minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to the district.
  • Operates equipment (e.g. trimmers, weed eaters, mowers, vacuum cleaners, burnishers, etc.) for the purpose of cleaning and maintaining building and grounds.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance, and minor repairs on custodial equipment (e.g. classroom furniture, replacing cord ends, grease and/or oil equipment, change belts, cleaning interior and exterior, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly and safely maintain facilities and grounds.
  • Performs the full range of custodial duties (refer to custodial job descriptions) for the purpose of ensuring a safe and orderly work environment.
  • Performs minor, job related, maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts, bags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and inspections following the district compliance program (e.g. change filters, oil and/or grease pumps and motors, change light bulbs, change belts, remove blockages in bathroom fixtures, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining equipment in a safe manner and optimal performance.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. supply requisitions, monthly playground inspection reports, work orders, requisitions, inspection records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Replenishes classroom, restroom, and other areas supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors for the purpose of providing information, taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Supervises arrangements for special events (e.g. rooms, furniture, and equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the provision of adequate facilities, materials, and equipment for meetings, classroom activities and events.
  • Transports various items to schools or other sites as assigned for the purpose of providing materials at job site and/or school site as may be required.
