Position Summary

The Bus Driver (Part-time) is responsible for the proper care and maintenance of the College's buses and for the safety of all passengers. The Bus Driver (Part-time) shall operate the College's buses and provide driving duties associated with the transportation of students, employees, and guests, including without limitation, athletic team members, coaches, members of college club and organizations, college staff and faculty, and/or other college affiliated groups. The Bus Driver (Part-time) must be able to perform the general duties associated with bus operation. The Bus Driver (Part-time) must always exhibit professionalism and proper temperament and must remain properly licensed, credentialed, and insurable per the College's carrier's requirements. The Bus Driver (Part-time) shall follow all applicable laws and comply with all policies of the College and the Alabama Community College System.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate the College's buses in a safe and effective manner in order to meet the transportation needs of the College and minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life, and according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures including those of all applicable Departments of Transportation, the College, and the Alabama Community College System
  • Assist college personnel with travel itineraries and vehicle use policies
  • Pick up and deliver employees, students, and guests as per designated schedule
  • Assist passengers with entering and exiting the bus
  • Perform safety and maintenance checks
  • Clean the bus as scheduled and/or required
  • Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored
  • Perform minor mechanical maintenance, ensure all required safety inspections are performed and documented, and complete pre/post-trip inspections
  • Advise appropriate personnel of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Maintain trip logs, gas receipts and any service receipts
  • Collect directions and know trip routes well
  • Stay alert at all times but specifically in bad traffic and/or weather conditions
  • Recognize hazardous driving conditions quickly and accurately and adapt effective courses of action
  • Interact with passengers and maintain order on the bus
  • Follow regulations regarding prescribed rest breaks for trips with lengthy travel durations
  • Maintain professional conduct in dealing with students, staff, administration, faculty, and the college community
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Capable of mobility, bending, kneeling, reaching, ascending and descending steps
  • Work flexible non-standard hours including an on-call schedule, nights and weekends to assist with special and athletic events or emergency driving duties as needed.
  • Assist in enforcing all College policies

  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills
  • Maintain a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times
  • Attend all staff meetings, College meetings, and professional development activities as required
  • Utilize telephone and/or other communication equipment in an effective manner
  • Utilize mapping or GPS software and/or devices in an effective manner

Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Comply with policies of the Alabama Community College System and College
  • Serve on College committees as required
  • Participate in professional development, compliance, performance excellence, and training activities as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

Required:

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B and C, with a P endorsement and without a K endorsement
  • Hold a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate (DOT Medical Card) on file with the Alabama Department of Public Safety
  • Two (2) years of full-time related work experience
  • Must be insurable by the College's Insurance Carrier (as determined by the Carrier)
  • Must have a Motor Vehicle Record that is acceptable to the College (Selected applicants will be required to sign an MVR release.)
  • Must pass initial and future drug screenings

Preferred:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in a community college setting
