Function / Position Summary
Assists in the day-to-day operations of the assigned building under the supervision of the Building Administrator and the Coordinator of Custodial. Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and mechanical systems, and communicating operational problems above their level of expertise to the appropriate personnel. This position maintains a clean and properly functioning building throughout the school day, providing staff and students with a safe, clean, and comfortable learning environment.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Assume general responsibility for building mechanical systems, maintenance, and cleanliness. Escalate major repairs and problems to Plant Operations.
- Perform and lead daily custodial duties, including, but not limited to, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, trash removal, restocking supplies, sanitizing restrooms, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, restroom maintenance, furniture assembly and graffiti removal.
- Assist Administration with establishment of custodian regular work and overtime schedules. Assign and direct work tasks and work orders. Assist with training on efficient methods of cleaning, maintenance and use of equipment.
- Coordinate and participate in the setups/tear downs and after-hours coverage for building events, extracurricular athletics and activities, and external rentals.
- Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly), including but not limited to, building systems, equipment, mobile classrooms, fire and security alarms, playgrounds, roofs, generators and boilers. Complete necessary paperwork.
- Perform general grounds upkeep duties, including snow/ice removal, salting, and landscape maintenance, including trash/debris pick up.
- Maintain "on-call" status to respond to emergency and/or after-hour events such as fire alarms, break-ins, snow/ice management or severe weather damage and take appropriate measures to deem building secure and operational.
- Adhere to security protocols for locking and unlocking doors. Actively monitor and report any security concerns, and immediately address urgent safety issues (e.g., spills, broken glass). Regularly perform basic safety checks.
- Operate and maintain swimming pool, including water treatments, testing, pumps, filters and cleaning.
- Maintain adequate inventory and request custodial supplies and parts as needed.
- Use approved communication platforms and the district's work order system to promptly receive, initiate, track, complete, and close work orders and routinely monitor email and notifications for timely responses.
- Support receiving, logging, inspecting and distributing building mail and deliveries. Prepare outgoing shipments as needed.
- Work independently or collaboratively with all district personnel and/or contractors to meet building needs.

Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid Illinois Driver's License required.
- Must hold a State of Illinois Swimming Pool Operator's License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred.
Experience / Knowledge
- Three to five (3-5) years' experience in maintenance and/or custodial related duties.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with adults, students and community members.
- Ability to communicate verbally and successfully complete written documentation in English.
- Basic computer knowledge to record and maintain written records.
- Knowledge of computer-assisted HVAC systems.
- Ability to read and write in English, and perform basic math for job-related calculations.
- Possess thorough knowledge of the methods, material, and equipment used in building care and cleaning. Experience in handling various cleaning chemicals used in the field.
- Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance and repairs on mechanical and building equipment, including, but not limited to temperature controls, boilers, air conditioning, and air handling equipment.
- Experience working with swimming pools, such as water treatment, testing and filtration systems preferred.
- Experience with all types of electric service and the ability to troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift in excess of 75 lbs. with proper technique.
- Ability to work safely from stepladder, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding at varying heights, up to 40 ft.
- Ability to push/pull up to 100 lbs. with proper technique.
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather for prolonged periods.
Terms of Employment
- This is a 12-month position. Salary and benefits are as established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education.
- Flexibility in work days/hours and overtime may be necessary.
- A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required on the mandatory practical application test.
- Starting salary is $28.49/hr.
