Description
Custodian Position
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning school environment to support student learning and staff effectiveness. This position performs routine cleaning, sanitation, minor maintenance, and facility support tasks to ensure building and grounds meet district standards for cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency. The Custodian responds to daily building needs, supports school activities, and contributes to a positive and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the community.
Facilities Cleaning & Maintenance
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, and common areas. Perform daily cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, disinfecting, and trash removal. Follow established cleaning schedules and procedures to ensure consistent standards across the building. Perform minor maintenance tasks and preventive upkeep as assigned. Inspect facilities and grounds regularly to identify cleanliness, safety, and maintenance needs. Submit work orders for repairs and maintenance needs through the district system. Assist with seasonal cleaning and deep cleaning during school breaks. Support basic groundskeeping duties, including snow removal, de-icing and exterior upkeep as assigned. Move furniture, equipment, and materials to support classroom needs and school operations.
Safety, Security & Building Operations
Support a safe and secure environment by following district safety procedures and protocols. Monitor building conditions and report safety hazards, damage, or concerns promptly. Assist with building security including locking/unlocking doors and securing the facility as assigned. Follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals, equipment, and materials. Respond to spills, accidents, and urgent cleaning needs in a timely manner. Participate in emergency response procedures as required.
Collaboration & Customer Service
Communicate effectively and professionally with staff, students, administrators, and community members. Respond to staff requests and building needs in a timely and solution-oriented manner. Support school events and activities by setting up and breaking down spaces as needed. Collaborate with maintenance and facilities staff to ensure building functionality. Maintain a positive, respectful, and service-oriented approach in all interactions.
Inventory & Equipment Management
Maintain custodial supplies and notify appropriate staff when inventory is low. Ensure proper storage and handling of cleaning supplies and equipment. Operate custodial equipment safely and effectively, including vacuums, floor machines, and other tools. Maintain equipment in good working condition and report repair needs.
Professional Responsibilities
Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and strong work ethic. Maintain confidentiality of student, staff, and school information. Follow all district policies, procedures, and safety guidelines. Participate in required training, including safety and compliance training. Adapt to changing priorities and perform additional duties as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of basic custodial practices, cleaning methods, and sanitation standards. Ability to operate custodial equipment and use cleaning chemicals safely. Ability to perform minor maintenance and identify facility needs. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond to urgent situations.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of background check and required screenings. Valid Colorado driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a school or public facility. Experience with custodial equipment and floor care. Experience supporting building operations and event setup. Multilingual skills.
Reports To
The Building Principal
Working Environment
Work involves frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying. May require lifting and moving equipment and materials. Work occurs in indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions. Use of cleaning chemicals and custodial equipment required. May require evening or shift work based on building needs.
