General Maintenance Technician
Tuscaloosa County Commission
Location: 714 Greensboro Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL, 35401-1859
POSITION SUMMARY: Employees in this class must have general knowledge and experience on the skill level of basic carpentry, mechanical, electrical, painting, HVAC, and plumbing. Work involves basic installation, repair, and maintenance of all the trades above. Prefer knowledge in basic carpentry which includes tasks such as hanging door frames/doors, hanging mudding, and finishing sheetrock, framing walls with either aluminum or wood studs, etc. Reports on installation and maintenance of general maintenance and systems are completed and maintained. The field includes but not limited to work orders that are received orally, electronically, and/or in writing and may be accompanied by penciled sketches or building plans. Employees proceed independently in carrying the work through to completion although a maintenance supervisor may check work while in process and completed jobs are tested for operation. Employees are expected to respond to maintenance requirements on a broad and diverse scope and are on-call to the Director of Maintenance and Facilities during, and after regular business working hours.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Current Driver's License
- High school diploma, General Education Diploma (GED), or higher
- A minimum of (5) five years' experience in the professional maintenance technician skilled trade OR United States Military technical related certification of 4 + years of documented general maintenance training and experience
- Associates degree or Certificate from an accredited post-secondary college, or completion of an apprenticeship in the trade
- Considerable experience working under a master/journeyman
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- State issued journeyman or master's license in a technical related field
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Install, troubleshoot, and repair hardware for general maintenance systems
- Tasks such as measuring, cutting, and installing materials, as well as cleaning, organizing and maintaining job sites, equipment, and tools.
- Performs related maintenance repairs to County facilities and properties
- Performs variety of tasks such as loading and unloading supplies, moving of furniture, picking up and delivering materials
- Install, troubleshoot, upgrade, and repair basic carpentry, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, painting, and plumbing needs. Cleans and opens clogged lines and fixtures
- Interprets architectural building plans and diagrams
- May be asked to work in trade areas such as HVAC, basic mechanical and electrical, etc. Individual will be crossed trained in such areas
- Proficient in technology such as computers, laptops, iPad, etc.
- Basic computer skills
- Work an on-call schedule
- Potential to earn overtime
- Performs all other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Basic knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the installation, maintenance, and repair of building and facilities technical related trades
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools, materials, and equipment employed in the field of general maintenance
- Maintain parts and tool inventory
- Considerable knowledge of state and national codes
- Skill in the detection, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing of basic carpentry, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, painting, etc.
- Ability to read and troubleshoot architectural drawings
- Ability to work from penciled sketches, building blueprints, and schematics
- Physical condition and strength adequate to do heavy lifting and carrying
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Demonstrate effective communication skills
- Self-motivated and trainable
