Description
Licensed HVAC Technician
Under general supervision, maintain, repair, and install heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and equipment throughout the district. Ensure the safe condition and proper operation of all HVAC systems in district facilities.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas driver's license
- Texas air conditioning and refrigeration contractor license or technician certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of HVAC repair, maintenance, and installation techniques
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and technical reference materials
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations
- Ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical problems
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively
Experience:
- Five years of experience in the HVAC field
Major Responsibilities and Duties
HVAC Project Coordination:
- Work cooperatively with others to schedule assigned repairs.
- Assist in selecting materials and hardware and estimating project costs, including labor, materials, and related expenses.
- Provide technical guidance to maintenance workers assisting with HVAC repairs.
- Maintain refrigerant dispensing records in compliance with federal regulations.
Maintenance and Repair:
- Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems, including rooftop units.
- Install new HVAC systems and components.
- Relocate and expand existing HVAC systems.
- Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
- Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and piping according to specifications and code requirements.
- Wire and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to schematics.
- Perform duct cleaning and air quality testing.
Inspection:
- Assist in inspecting district facilities to detect and initiate necessary HVAC repairs.
- Conduct on-site inspection of completed repair projects and ensure work areas are clean.
- Assist in monitoring and inspecting contract work as required.
Safety:
- Support training and orientation of workers in safety procedures and proper tool usage.
- Follow established safety procedures when operating tools and equipment.
- Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report conditions that cannot be immediately corrected.
Inventory and Equipment:
- Follow preventive maintenance schedules for tools and equipment.
- Assist in maintaining inventory and recommending replacement of equipment when necessary.
Other:
- Assist with energy conservation surveys to promote efficient and cost-effective HVAC operation.
- Maintain accurate records of materials and labor used.
- Maintain assigned district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
- Work irregular hours and respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
Provide occasional technical oversight and inspection of work performed by maintenance workers assisting with HVAC assignments.
Tools/Equipment Used: Meter, gauge, welding equipment, ladder, hoist, hand and power tools, pipe bender, propane torch, light truck or van. Posture: Frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Motion: Frequent use of hands and arms; operation of tools and equipment; frequent driving. Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying on a regular basis. Environment: Work indoors and outdoors in hot and cold temperatures; exposure to mechanical, electrical, and environmental hazards; frequent districtwide travel. Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; respond effectively to urgent repair needs.
