Substitute Custodian (Full-Time, 2nd Shift)
Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for 1 to 2 positions available - Substitute Custodian (full-time, 2nd shift position). Custodians perform tasks related to the cleaning and maintenance of various buildings and their surroundings and to create a safe and clean environment for students and staff.
Essential duties and responsibilities: Other duties appropriate to the position may be assigned.
- Full-Time (Sub) Position (Fill-in and/or supports current staff on their daily route, 2nd shift)
- Sweeps or shovels snow from steps, ramps, and walks at building entrances and salts icy steps and walks as necessary
- Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc. in the building
- Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building or in obtaining and setting up needed equipment and/or material
- Restocks disposable items and provides supervisor with inventory usage and data
- Assists in maintaining safe working conditions for all employees in the building and on the grounds
- Performs any immediate custodial needs requested by the building administrator
- Assists in other assignments of an unusual or emergency nature when needed to insure the District's ability to operate
- Maintains the equipment pertinent to custodial duties in satisfactory working conditions
- Assists in the unloading and distribution of materials
- Works with other custodians and personnel cooperatively
- Sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors and other surfaces
- Cleans, renovates, and renews floor surface finishes
- Cleans and dusts furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, windows, doors, trim, and related furnishings
- Cleans chalkboards/whiteboards, chalk rails, and erasers
- Washes/cleans light fixtures
- Replaces light bulbs/tubes as necessary
- Painting
- Moves furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment
- Collects, bags, and disposes of trash
- Locks doors and windows to classrooms and offices at end of day
- Turns off unnecessary lighting
- Cleans and services lavatories, toilet rooms, and locker rooms
- Washes all interior and exterior glass including framed pictures, partitions, and doors
- Reports items that require repair
- Follows written work schedule
- Coordinates work with lead Operations Utility Coordinator and Operations Supervisor
- Guards property against fire, theft, and illegal entry; maintain building security each school day
- Ability to work from ladders and/or scaffolding
- Maintains and operates all equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks
- Vacuums, spot cleans, and extracts carpet as necessary
- Performs all assigned duties in a manner in which contributes to the safety and wellbeing of the students, staff and buildings
- Performs all custodial/operations duties assigned by supervisors
- Any other duties or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the administration
- The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the District

- Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
- Language Skills
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, students, or other employees of the organization
- Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers
- Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and waist while performing the duties of this job. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and depth perception and peripheral vision and color vision. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails, and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors, occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees, occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces as well as occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

- Calendar: Sub full-time, 2nd shift, Up to 8 hours/day (Start time 2:30 pm)
- Compensation: $16.07/hour
