Bus Driver

The job of Bus Driver is to safely operate a passenger bus, for the purpose of safely transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from school district sponsored events; ensuring the school bus is operating safely; and ensuring the safety of students, during transport and while loading and unloading from the school bus.

Essential Functions:

  • Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over an assigned route in accordance with a time schedule.
  • Supervises, assists and instructs students and other passengers, in the safe entry and exiting of the bus, during regular and emergency situations.
  • Transports students, staff and chaperones on field trips, athletic activities and other special trips.
  • Enforces District Policies and procedures related to transportation and maintains discipline on buses.
  • Prepares student discipline citations, as needed.
  • Maintains bus cleanliness on a daily basis, including washing, as needed.
  • Performs minor bus maintenance checks and reports maintenance needs.
  • Maintains good order among students on the buses, following District Policies regarding the discipline of children and contact with parents and other citizens.
  • Instructs students and others on proper bus behavior and emergency procedures.
  • Insures compliance with applicable provisions of State Motor Vehicle Code as related to bus driving and transporting of students.
  • To perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Transportation or the Business Manager.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid Illinois Drivers' License.
  • Possesses or is able to obtain a CDL Driver's License Class B, with passenger and school bus endorsement.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to operate a school bus, exercising good judgment and extreme caution.
  • Ability to drive a school bus safely over a variety of normal and hazardous road conditions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, the public and staff members.
  • A work history demonstrating dependability and reliability.

Physical Demands:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; intermittent stooping, kneeling, crouching and /or crawling; and continual manual hand and finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking and 15% standing.
