Job Title

Racine Public Library Bookmobile Driver

Position Purpose

The Racine Public Library has been the community's educational and informational institution since 1897. All employees are expected and encouraged to create a positive and friendly environment for library users, the community, and co-workers. It is expected that all employees be flexible, responsive to change, and take a leadership role when necessary. Essential duties may change in response to evolving community needs. Under the direction of the Bookmobile Supervisor, drives the Racine Public Library's Bookmobile. Schedule to be determined by supervisor; some evenings and weekends required.

Essential Duties

Essential duties include:

  • Driving the Bookmobile to and from stops in various locations
  • Driving to service locations when necessary
  • Fueling as needed
  • Checking materials in and out
  • Keeping statistics as required
  • Handling simple reference and information services on the unit, and consulting with Reference Librarians regarding more complex questions
  • Providing readers' advisory services and reading book reviews and other materials related to providing this service, and to recommend materials for purchase
  • Handling collection maintenance, including weeding items and rotating items to keep the collection at an appropriate size and to provide patrons with variety
  • Assisting in assessing the performance of specific bookmobile stops, and in revising the bookmobile schedule
  • Shelving materials and maintaining order of shelves
  • Searching for requested materials
  • Reporting mechanical problems to Bookmobile Associate and/or Bookmobile Supervisor
  • Handling routine housekeeping and maintenance duties needed to keep the Bookmobile attractive
  • Offering assistance to patrons
  • Assisting patrons in locating library materials and information
  • Enforcing library behavior guidelines
  • Maintaining a consistent and reliable attendance record
Associated Duties

Associated duties include:

  • Performing all Assistant level duties in the library as assigned.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Department Head and Bookmobile Associate.
Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college desirable
  • Must have a valid CDL license with air brake certification
  • Must have a valid Wisconsin Drivers License with a good driving record for the last year; proof of insurance required

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include:

  • Ability to use personal judgment to effectively problem-solve.
  • Ability to work with the public and other staff members politely and with respect.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a pleasant and professional manner.
  • Ability to drive a bus or bookmobile using good judgment and safe driving skills
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment
Supplemental Information

Physical demands of the position include:

  • Climbing in and out of the Bookmobile
  • Driving Bookmobile in varying road conditions
  • Bending, reaching, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, sitting, crouching, climbing, balancing, reaching, talking, listening, concentrating, writing, sorting, pushing a loaded book cart
  • Lift and/or move heavy objects in and out of the Bookmobile
  • Shoveling snow as necessary to allow people to enter and exit the Bookmobile

Environmental/working conditions of the position usually work inside the Bookmobile, but outdoor work (such as shoveling snow) in inclement weather may be required. Equipment used includes motor vehicle (Bookmobile), radio, cell phone, hand truck, automated circulation system (computer, laptop, modem, etc.), shovel, various cleaning utensils.
