Produce Clerk - FT 40 hrs per wk
Department: Produce
Reports To: Produce Manager
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Level: $17.00 to $24.00 / hr.
Summary: Responsible to stock and display fresh produce while providing prompt, friendly, helpful customer service to meet department goals for sales, margins, labor productivity and customer service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following: Other duties may be assigned.
Customer Service:
- Assist customer in a prompt and courteous manner, exceeding expectations for service
- Provide samples of produce that should be promoted, having tasted it first to ensure quality
Quality:
- Replenish displays daily by rotating and culling, keeping organic, conventional and transitional separate
- Prep produce
- Dispose of produce that is unsuitable for sale by selling, giving to deli or throwing inedible product in compost. Sell edible produce at discount by doctoring-up, repackaging, and labeling
- Keep back stock produce stored properly
- Know how to receive and price orders
Safety and Security:
- Keep produce room, cooler and sales floor tidy and produce displays tidy and fully stocked
- Use equipment safely. Advise manager of equipment repair and replacement needs
- Deal with shoplifters, disorderly customers, and medical emergencies in accordance with established procedures
Department Maintenance:
- Keep well informed about products by asking questions, using produce reference book and tasting small samples of new produce
- Participate in monthly inventories
- Give constructive feedback to manager and buyer when necessary
- Attend department and storewide meetings
- Perform other tasks as assigned by manager
Responsibilities to Safety:
- Protect the safety of self, co-worker's, and BriarPatch Co-op patrons at all times
- Report any potentially harmful equipment or situations to the immediate supervisor without delay
- Report safety-related accidents and incidents at once to supervisor
- Follow all company and safety policies and procedures
- Operate equipment in a safe manner that will not lead to injury of self or others

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED certificate preferred. Prior experience in working with produce preferred; interest in learning about produce required.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively with customers or employees
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or electronic form
Computer Skills: An individual should have knowledge of:
- Internet software
- Inventory software
- Order processing systems
- Spreadsheet software and
- Word Processing software
