Lead Custodian – Elementary School

The Lead Custodian is responsible for overseeing the daily custodial operations of the assigned school. This position ensures the building is clean, safe, and properly maintained while providing direction and support to custodial staff. The Lead Custodian serves as the primary contact for building-level custodial and basic maintenance needs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assign and monitor daily work of custodial staff to ensure completion and quality of tasks
  • Oversee and participate in the general cleaning and maintenance of the school building and surrounding grounds, including but not limited to dusting, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing/waxing floors, mowing and trimming grass, and snow removal as needed
  • Respond to immediate custodial needs such as spills, accidents, and weather-related issues
  • Promote a positive and cooperative working environment among custodial staff
  • Follow all District policies, procedures, and safety regulations
  • Perform custodial duties in accordance with District standards
  • Communicate effectively with administration, staff, and outside vendors regarding building needs
  • Monitor building systems (heating, ventilation, lighting, etc.) and report concerns to the appropriate department
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed, including but not limited to replacing lamps, wall-mounted fixtures, and minor furniture repairs
  • Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and equipment; submit requests for replenishment as needed
  • Maintain required custodial documentation and records related to daily operations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Marginal Job Functions:

  • Assist with special projects and event setup as needed
  • Provide support to other district buildings when required
  • Perform seasonal or periodic deep cleaning tasks
  • Attend meetings or trainings as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous custodial experience required; supervisory or lead experience preferred
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment
  • Ability to lead, organize and prioritize work assignments

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing and reaching
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
