Job Summary:
The Lead Patient Safety Coordinator coordinates patient safety activities across the AU Health System. This role provides guidance and leadership to the other Patient Safety Specialist within the Clinical Quality Excellence Department. The Specialist works closely and collaboratively with clinical leadership, the AU Health System team and staff to facilitate patient safety initiatives. This position evaluates, identifies, plans, coordinates and leads system-wide patient safety activities to present patient harm.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Assists with the development and implementation of the Patient Safety Plan and the patient safety evaluation system.
- Actively identifies patient safety opportunities. Coordinates, investigates, analyzes and responds to quality/patient safety issues, events and significant care issues or trends. Conducts surveillance, analysis and data reporting for patient safety, while complying with regulatory/accreditation requirements.
- Participates in implementation of standardized patient safety clinical practices at the system and practice level. Develops and analyzes data for administrative and clinical decision making related to patient safety. Determines risk for exposure of harm/potential harm to patient in response to identified opportunities, outcomes, etc. Assists in the determination of the level of containment/control required for: immediate harm, risk for harm in current process and potential for harm.
- Assesses/investigates patient safety related events. Facilitates root cause analysis, proactive risk assessments and variation reduction. Identifies improvements related to patient safety and prevention of harm through the use of process improvement methodologies and tools. Collaborates with system and facility teams, care management teams, clinical discipline teams, facility leadership, risk management and other groups as appropriate.
- Communicates recommendations/required actions to avoid future exposure of harm to patients. Presents data and reports deficiencies identified during internal surveillance and monitoring, and the status of implementation to key stakeholders and identified committees. Serves as a subject matter expert on internal and external patient safety matters. Shares responsibility for ensuring security and privacy of data.

- Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education: Associates Nursing or Bachelors Nursing-Preferred
- CPHQ - Cert Prof Healthcare Quality
- RN-Compact or RN - Reg Nurse (Single State)
Minimum 5 years in a clinical acute care setting. Required
Required Minimum Skills:
Computer skills required to include Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and written communication. Group facilitation skills and ability to manage programs and projects.
