Bus Driver
Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for a Bus Driver. The district seeks a qualified individual to drive a school bus to transport students over specified routes according to time schedules while complying with traffic regulations.
Essential duties and responsibilities: Other duties appropriate to the position may be assigned.
- Drives a school bus safely and professionally on schedule in all weather conditions
- Drive students to school and home, making safety and efficiency your number one priority.
- Transport students to various sports and school field trips as needed
- Performs and properly completes daily pre-trip inspections
- Pre-trip and post-trip, report any issues on a service request form and submit to the supervisor.
- Complies with discipline policies outlined in the School Code of Conduct for Transportation
- Shows proficiency in handling and maneuvering a school bus
- Uses established routes, designated bus stops, and time schedules
- Reports bus accidents, work, and pupil injuries to the proper persons
- Conducts emergency evacuation drills as directed
- Performs bus housekeeping duties as provided in the contract
- Reports bus defects and repair requests, using established procedures
- Fuels vehicles as needed
- Prepares and submits all written reports required on a timely basis
- Attends workshops and training sessions as required
- Maintains knowledge of State and District rules and regulations concerning the transporting of students
- Assists in the establishing and adjusting of bus routes
- Routes are approximately 6 hours per day
- Displays tact and courtesy when dealing with students, staff, and others
- Maintains regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
- Any other duties or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the administration
- The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the District
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise students while transporting them
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Commercial Drivers License B with P and S endorsements and no Air Brake restrictions preferred; will train the right candidate
- Must have no points on driving record and be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical including drug test
- Ability to pass driver's license check and criminal record check, as required by the State of Michigan
- Language Skills
- Ability to read a limited number of two and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between a series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
- Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add and subtract two to six digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
- Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems.
- Other Skills and Abilities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents; to read and understand maps, pass State Skill Test, State Written Test, Department of Transportation Physical and MDE Basic Training Program; to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form; to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand; will frequently bend or twist at the neck and hips more than an average person; frequently repeats the same hand, arm, or finger potion; uses hand strength to grasp tools and in continuously driving on the job. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
- The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. The employee will frequently drive while performing the duties of this job.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces; must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and coworkers; has the direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
