Admitting Clerk – Hospital

The Admitting/Registration Clerk serves as the first point of contact for patients entering the hospital. This role requires the ability to perform both receptionist and medical secretary duties, including greeting patients, collecting personal and insurance information, and ensuring a smooth registration process. Strong organizational skills are essential to maintain patient flow and accuracy. This position works Monday–Friday, 5:30 AM–2:00 PM, with rotating weekends and holidays. The starting wage is $16 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Greet patients and answer incoming calls while providing excellent customer service
  • Record demographic, insurance, and billing information in the CPSI system; research missing details and obtain required signatures
  • Counsel patients and families on financial matters, including insurance
  • Provide information on billing, patient rights, visiting hours, and hospital procedures
  • Collect and record payments or forward information to Patient Accounts
  • Maintain and process orders sent by referring offices
  • Prepare estimates of patient financial responsibility and communicate them clearly
  • Understand HMC payment policies and financial assistance options
  • Screen calls to determine urgency and route appropriately
  • Keep the waiting area clean and orderly
  • Order and maintain supplies
  • Treat all patients and families with dignity and respect
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Some college coursework preferred
  • Medical office reception experience required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology required
  • Understanding of patient registration and documentation procedures
  • Strong telephone communication skills, including in stressful situations
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to type 35–45 wpm preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic insurance procedures and third-party payer documentation
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
