Senior Accountant
The Accounting Office-Controller department of South Dakota State Universities (SDSU) is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Senior Accountant to join our team. This position plays a key role in analyzing financial data, preparing financial statements, and supporting interim reporting processes. We're looking for someone with strong analytical abilities, excellent communication skills, and a desire to grow within a critical financial role at the university. This position is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.
The Accounting Department at SDSU is a highly efficient and dedicated team responsible for a wide range of critical financial activities. The department ensures that daily financial transactions are accurately recorded and oversees property management as well as compiling comprehensive financial statements and fulfilling other reporting requirements. This position is located in Brookings, SD. Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs reconciliation and advanced accounting tasks.
- Coding and distributing vouchers from other state agencies.
- Assist with interim financial reporting and ACFR (Annual Comprehensive Financial Reporting) processes.
- Provide support to the facility accounting department to streamline their month-end and year-end process to ensure timely financial data processing.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of accounting and budgeting management for project or construction management
- Accounting practices/principles and able to apply in a variety of settings.
- Familiarity working with a variety of funding sources
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and Access
- Familiarity with forecasting methods and data analysis
- Skill & Ability to:
- Perform reconciliations and establish action plans to resolve financial discrepancies or errors.
- Prepare and review financial statements, footnote, and required supplementary information.
- Participate in external audits, prepare audit work papers, and assist the controller as needed.
- Identify areas for increasing efficiency and effectiveness; implement and document those changes while maintaining effective internal control and accurate financial information.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and multitask to meet deadlines.
- Preferred qualifications:
- Understanding of budgeting and regulatory requirements
- Lean process improvement knowledge
- Knowledge of University ERP system Ellucian Banner
