Job Description

The Rig Engineer provides on-site engineering support for drilling, completion, and workover operations. This role serves as a key technical liaison between field operations and office-based engineering teams, ensuring wells are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and operational standards.

The position requires strong technical expertise in drilling operations, real-time problem solving, and the ability to operate effectively in challenging environments. The Rig Engineer collaborates closely with field supervisors, contractors, and service providers to optimize performance, reduce downtime, and maintain operational integrity.

ResponsibilitiesEngineering & Operational Support

  • Provide real-time engineering support for drilling, completion, and workover activities
  • Monitor drilling parameters such as hydraulics, torque, drag, and hole conditions
  • Troubleshoot downhole and surface operational issues
  • Identify and recommend performance optimization opportunities to reduce non-productive time (NPT)

Well Planning & Execution

  • Assist in the development and execution of drilling, workover, and completion programs
  • Support mud programs, casing design, and cementing operations
  • Ensure proper implementation of wellbore design and bottom hole assembly (BHA) configurations
  • Monitor adherence to operational timelines and cost expectations

Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)

  • Promote and enforce strong safety practices on-site
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, environmental, and operational standards
  • Participate in job safety analyses (JSAs), risk assessments, and safety meetings
  • Support incident reporting and investigation processes

Contractor & Service Coordination

  • Coordinate with contractors and service providers to ensure technical accuracy and execution quality
  • Review job designs, operational reports, and service performance
  • Verify equipment readiness and suitability for operating conditions
  • Contribute to contractor evaluations and lessons learned processes

Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare and review daily operational reports
  • Track key performance indicators including cost and downtime
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and well records
  • Communicate daily operational updates to engineering and management teams

Operational Environment Support

  • Apply best practices for operating in challenging environments
  • Support equipment readiness and operational planning for environmental conditions
  • Consider logistical constraints and environmental sensitivities in decision-making

Skills and QualificationsRequired Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field

Required Experience

  • 3-7 years of experience in drilling, completion, or workover operations
  • Hands-on experience in field-based oil and gas operations
  • Experience supporting rig-based engineering activities

Certifications (Required or Preferred)

  • Well Control Certification (IWCF or IADC, Engineer or Supervisor level)
  • H2S safety certification
  • Additional training in environmental or extreme operating conditions preferred

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of drilling mechanics, hydraulics, and wellbore behavior
  • Knowledge of mud systems, casing design, and cementing practices
  • Ability to interpret real-time drilling data and make operational decisions
  • Familiarity with cost tracking and performance metrics

Soft Skills
