Position Purpose
The CDL Driver - Athletic Events is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of Wheeler Middle/High School students and staff to and from athletic events, competitions, and related school-sponsored activities. This part-time, flexible position supports student participation in extracurricular athletics by ensuring reliable transportation to events held off campus, primarily during afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
Essential Job Functions
- Operates a school or activity bus in compliance with all local, state, and federal transportation laws and regulations.
- Transports student-athletes, coaches, and equipment to athletic competitions and events.
- Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and readiness.
- Maintains order and ensures student safety on the bus during transport.
- Completes required documentation, including mileage logs, trip forms, and vehicle condition reports.
- Communicates clearly and professionally with students, coaches, and school personnel.
- Follows designated routes and maintains an appropriate schedule for pick-up and drop-off.
- Remains on-site or nearby during events as directed by athletic or transportation staff.
- Reports any accidents, incidents, or vehicle issues promptly and accurately.
- Adheres to North Stonington Public Schools' transportation policies and expectations of conduct.
Additional Duties
- May assist in transporting students for other non-athletic school activities or field trips as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Coordinator or Athletic Director.

Equipment
- Operates school buses and activity vehicles.
- Utilizes GPS, two-way radios, and district transportation communication systems.
Travel Requirements
- Required travel to various athletic venues, both in and out of district.
- Trips may include evenings, weekends, and occasional late-night returns.

- Strong knowledge of safe bus operation and transportation procedures.
- Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
- Excellent driving skills, with attention to safety and student well-being.
- Ability to establish a positive and respectful relationship with students and staff.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrates responsibility, punctuality, and professionalism.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Must be able to sit for extended periods and assist students entering and exiting the vehicle.
- Occasionally required to lift or move equipment and athletic gear.
- Exposure to inclement weather and high noise levels from student passengers.
Qualifications Profile
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements required.
- Minimum 21 years of age.
- Clean driving record and successful background check.
- Must pass physical exam, drug screening, and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.
- Experience transporting students or working in a school district preferred.
FLSA Status
Part-time, as-needed basis during athletic seasons
Non-exempt
$25.00 per hour
Hours vary depending on athletic schedules and transportation needs.
