General Summary
The Medical Assistant operates within their scope to assist clinical staff by performing patient care duties, maintaining organization, and ensuring a smooth workflow. This position requires professionalism, excellent customer service, attention to detail, multitasking abilities, critical thinking, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Adhere to established safety protocols including infection control and safe patient handling.
- Provide direct patient interaction such as escorting patients, obtaining vital signs, EKGs, and verifying medical histories and medications.
- Document patient information accurately and promptly in electronic health records.
- Manage phone communications, route messages, and assist with patient inquiries and test result follow-ups.
- Assist with medication renewals, authorizations, and administration as ordered.
- Perform point-of-care lab testing and collect specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Schedule appointments, procedures, and admissions as directed by providers.
- Complete necessary paperwork including prior authorizations and referrals efficiently.
- Maintain supply inventory and ensure exam areas are clean and well-stocked.
- Educate patients and guardians on electronic health record portals and assist with enrollment.
- Support orientation and training of new medical assistants.
- Demonstrate accountability, teamwork, and reliability while managing workload under pressure.
Education
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program or equivalent experience. High school diploma required.
Experience
Preferred: One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or related medical specialist, ideally in a clinical setting.
Certification and Licenses
Preferred: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential from an accredited organization such as the American Medical Technologist (AMT). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Mental and Physical Requirements
Requires considerable mental focus, ability to lift up to 35 pounds, and perform physical activities including standing, walking, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional encounters with hostile individuals. Minimal physical discomfort expected.
