DESCRIPTION
Summer Discovery is Shoreview Parks and Recreation's highly popular summer child care program. The program operates Monday - Friday at the Shoreview Community Center, a high quality facility with numerous resources. Children entering grades K-6 spend a fun-filled summer participating in activities ranging from weekly field trips, swimming, crafts, science projects, active games and more.
We're looking for individuals who enjoy working with children and creating fun, educational activities that will make for a memorable summer. Summer Discovery staff work collaboratively to ensure participants have a safe and fun summer.
DUTIES INCLUDE
We are accepting applications for the following positions for the 2026 summer season.
LEAD CAMP COUNSELOR
Monday-Friday: 40 hours/week; June-August
$16.25 - 18.50 per hour
• Guide and supervise a group of campers, ensuring their safety, well-being, and engagement in a fun, inclusive environment.
• Plan, organize, and lead games, crafts, and other activities for the summer
• Work with camp coordinators to follow daily schedules and resolve any issues; act as a positive role model
• Be familiar with and follow all safety and emergency procedures
• Communicate with parents
• Straighten and organize room for next day activities
ASSISTANT CAMP COUNSELOR
Monday-Friday: 30-40 hours/week; June-August
$14.25 - 15.75 per hour
• Assist Lead Camp Counselor to guide and supervise a group of campers; engage children in activities and ensure supervision at all times
• Help with organizing activities, ensuring camper safety, resolving issues, and creating a positive and fun environment for the campers
• Prepare and serve snacks
• Be familiar with and follow all safety and emergency procedures
• Communicate with parents
• Straighten and organize room for next day activities
FLOAT CAMP COUNSELOR
Various hours Monday-Friday: 20-30 hours/week; June-August
$14.25 - 15.75 per hour
• Flexible role that involves assisting where help is needed throughout the camp day.
• Float between different groups or activities, pick-up/drop-off campers to different activities/camps at the community center or to swim lessons
• Assist with activities, games, crafts as well as clean-up and organizing materials. Ensure campers follow rules.
• Provide backup for absent counselors
• Help maintain a fun and inclusive environment
SUBSTITUTE CAMP COUNSELOR
Various hours Monday-Friday: 10-40 hours/week; June-August
$14.25 - 15.75 per hour
• Fill-in for regular Counselors when needed, ensuring campers are safe and engaged
• Lead activities, help manage the group, and maintain a fun and inclusive environment
• Assist with activities, games, crafts as well as clean-up and organizing materials. Ensure campers follow rules.
• Prepare and serve snacks
• Be familiar with and follow all safety and emergency procedures
• Communicate with parents
• Straighten and organize room for next day activities
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be age 16 or older
Previous experience working with children is required for Lead Camp Counselor position
Previous experience working with children is desired for Assistant/Float/Substitute Camp Counselor positions. Training provided.
Please note: some staff will swim and/or accompany children into the Community Center's pools as well as off-site locations to supervise and ensure safety. This is based on program needs and the employee's ability.
