Position Title: Custodian
Reports To: Building Principals
Terms of Employment: May 26 - August 7, 5:30 am to 2:00 pm, $17 per hour no benefits.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated aptitude for the successful completion of tasks in the fulfillment of the assigned responsibilities.
- Experience with school custodial services or the equivalent in custodial service in other institutions and/or firms helpful but not required.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
Required clearances:
- Certificate of good health signed by a licensed physician.
- State of Illinois fingerprinting and background check in compliance with state code and district policy requirements. (A fingerprint-based criminal history records check and a check of the Statewide Sex Offender Database and Violent Offender Against Youth Database (when available) will be performed on the successful candidate as required by State law. Each newly hired employee must complete an Immigration and Naturalization Service Form as required by federal law. The District retains the right to discharge any employee whose criminal background investigation reveals a conviction for committing or attempting to commit any of the offenses outlined in Section 5/21-23a of The School Code or who falsifies, or omits facts from, his or her employment application or other employment documents.)
- Must currently have a driver's license.
Required skills:
- Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds during the daily performance of the position, with occasional 50-70 pound lifts
- Able to sit, stand, kneel, walk, carry objects, and use hand and power tools as necessary to adequately complete essential elements of the position
- Able to write and speak or otherwise adequately communicate in order to notify others of imminent danger, complete reports and communicate with supervisor and other personnel in the workplace
- Able to organize work in order to complete assigned tasks
Brief Description of Position:
- Must be able to perform basic building cleaning duties to provide a healthy, safe and attractive physical environment.
- Must be available to assist building custodians with their summer duties
- Must be responsible in securing the building at all times.
- Must be willing to work additional hours when asked
Performance Responsibilities: Assist the building custodians with their summer duties which could incluse the follow:
- Performs basic cleaning duties to keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
- Maintains a sense of pride in the areas of responsibility which are presented to the public.
- Follows recommended and established cleaning procedures in assigned areas of responsibilities. Asks for training where knowledge is inadequate for tasks.
- Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Restrooms: Scrubs and disinfects toilet floors and cleans all sanitary fixtures, or more frequently as needed or requested. Refills sanitary containers, including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and sanitary napkin containers.
- Classrooms: Sweep, mop, and wax classrooms and dusts furniture. Vacuums all carpeted areas and steam clean if required. Cleans white boards and chalkboards as requested.
- Corridors: Cleans corridors by mopping and waxing.
- Water fountains: Clean and sanitize water fountains.
- Kitchen/lunch room: Removes refuse from the kitchen and lunch room. Cleans and sanitizes floors in the lunchroom after breakfast and lunch, or more frequently as needed or requested.
- Locker rooms: Sweep, mop, and wax classrooms and dusts furniture.
- Carries out preventative maintenance on all buildings and building equipment.
- Washes all windows on both the inside and outside
- Makes such minor building repairs, as s/he is capable of. Reports need repairs needed and safety concerns promptly to the building custodian or the Building Principal.
- Remains on the school premises during work hours when scheduled to work. Remains on school grounds when requested by either the Building Principal.
- Assumes responsibility for the opening/closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
- Prepares for and cleans up after night activities as needed/requested by supervisor/building principal. Is present during activities as requested, if not part of regular work shift.
- Is available to assist in other areas and other custodians as needed.
- Assists in maintaining standards of building and site cleanliness to provide a healthy, safe, and attractive physical environment.
- Assists visitors and building groups as needed. Is courteous and polite with students, staff and co-workers, and the general public.
- Assists with building security by making routine facility checks, reporting any suspicious occurrences, and securing buildings daily.
- Completes and submits accurate time sheets in a timely manner.
- Is available for off-schedule work as requested by the Building Principal.
- Works as part of summer work crew as assigned by the Princiapls or Superintendent.
- Arrives punctually and does not leave until shift is over or required/requested work is complete.
- Follows all rules, regulations, policies, etc., pertaining to the completion of all facets of the position. Follows established safety procedures at all times.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
