Description
A Material Handler focuses on unloading barges in a safe efficient manner. Material Handlers are responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment and basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF POSITION:
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
- Follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Unloading aggregates from barges.
- Competent to draft out and prep barges, general deckhand knowledge (knot tying) to properly secure barge and unloading cells.
- Attendance required according to Company Attendance Policy to ensure crew can operate at normal efficiency level
- Attitude/cooperation: always maintaining courteous and professional manner with co-workers.
- Must be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift changes
- Overtime work required. Out of town or county work may be required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary
- Must adhere to PPE (personal protective equipment) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition as supplied by company
- Must meet Driver Qualification Standard.
- Must be able to travel in Louisiana and Mississippi.
- Assumes additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
- Mechanical equipment operating experience required.
- Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness, and a willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards.
- Must have reliable transportation and can travel. Periodic evenings, nights, weekends, and overtime hours are expected.
- Must always wear proper attire including safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image.
- Project a positive and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional conduct with supervisors and fellow co-workers.
- Must be able to provide proper documentation that you have the legal right to work in the United States.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The position requires working outside, frequently for long periods of time in all weather, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
While working, the employee might be exposed to uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles or machines and dust/debris.
