POSITION TITLE Facility Manager/Head Custodian
SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT Elementary, Middle, or High School
SALARY Salary Grade 58 plus 7% supplement
+ $250 monthly supplement
FLSA STATUS Non-exempt
REPORTS TO Principal or Assistant Maintenance Director
SUPERVISES Custodians (as needed)
WORK WEEK SCHEDULE Monday - Friday; evenings
WORK HOURS 40
NUMBER OF MONTHS PER YEAR 12
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under the supervision of the Building Principal and the guidance of the Custodial Supervisor, the Head Custodian coordinates and performs environmental services, including cleaning and maintenance of school buildings, basic repairs, and support services for day and evening school activities. This position helps provide a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains the daily work schedule of direct reports for routine cleaning.
- Assigns additional tasks fairly according to school activities.
- Check on supply inventory, place orders, and put in work requests.
- Helps facilitate weekend overtime as applicable.
- Check school grounds inside and out daily.
- Prepare the school for special events.
- Push down hallways and sweep, mop, vacuum, run buffers, and/or scrubbers.
- Respond to all calls from the front office for clean-up assistance.
- Ensures that sidewalks and entryways are cleared of snow and ice.
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Principal or Assistant Principal.
- Raises and lowers flags at the start and end of the workday.
- Performs minor or basic repairs.
- Open and secure buildings at the start and end of the workday and turn on and off lights at the start and end of the day. Adjust heating or air conditioning, as allowed.
- May arrange furniture for meetings or other events.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
- General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.
- Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to perform medium physical work.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to attend work in person.
- Follow all Board Policies and performance standards.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school
- Minimum of five (5) years of custodial experience
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
WORKING CONDITIONS:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments and come into direct contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
