Position Description
ENTRY SALARY: $18.33/HR

The City of Clearwater has a need for temporary employees to supplement our permanent workforce. These temporary employees are invaluable in meeting the mission of the agency.

The definition of a Temporary Employee:
• Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
• Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
• NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).
Under direct supervision, the Solid Waste Worker cleans vehicles, picks up trash, dumps trash cans, sorts through recycling, and performs general manual labor in the collection and disposal of all types of garbage and related solid waste.
Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs manual labor in the collection, disposal, and handling of solid waste, garbage, and recycling materials within the City; maintains cleanliness and operational success of the City and its facilities.
  • Performs debris removal, salvage, and demolition tasks for the various projects occurring within the City; removes unwanted material while adhering to safety regulations; pushes and pulls large garbage containers and operates vehicles with hydraulics for assistance.
  • Cleans and processes recycling materials that are collected within the City; cleans and maintains processing center and various workstations; sorts through recycling material for clean products and disposes of refuse or solid waste material.
  • Manually collects solid waste and refuse material for residents and commercial owners using solid waste services; uses heavy equipment to pick up bins and deposit refuse into truck.
  • Cleans, washes, and maintains trucks and equipment for next day use; identifies issues of repair or maintenance with vehicles and ensures all routine maintenance occurs.
  • Wears safety apparel and follows all safety protocols and policies.
  • Works with other staff and collaborates as part of a team; communicates and engages professionally and courteously with other workers and the general public.
  • Remains alert to surroundings and performs tasks safely and professionally.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
Heavy lifting (back screen required) and other equipment as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Must have minimum Tenth Grade Education. High School Diploma, High School Equivalency or G.E.D. Certificate is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
