WATER METER READER/REPAIRMAN - GR. C
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
FULL-TIME (37 HOURS PER WEEK)
PAY RANGE: $23.65 TO $29.92 PER HOUR
Skilled manual work in reading, repairing, and installing water meters; manual work in water service activities and in assisting water division crews in construction and repair projects; all other related work as required. Observes and records meter readings in homes and business establishments for billing purposes; enters readings in logbooks and submits logbook for billing; investigates abnormal consumption readings; notified superior of situations requiring special attention. Investigates faulty meters; repairs and calibrates meters; installs new meters using hand and small power tools; installs wiring for inside and outside meters; maintains records of meter installations, location of meters inside and outside buildings, turn-ons and shut offs of water service, and meter repairs; maintains inventory of meters and related supplies. Responds to service requests; responds to homes with frozen pipes and flooded cellars. Answers questions and responds to complaints of citizens concerning water service, billing and related matters. Assists maintenance and construction crews with installation and repair of water services and grounds work; assists in repair of main leads and in other emergency situations. Drives plow and assists in snow removal operations.
High school graduation preferred; six months experience in some phase of water division activity or in public utility billing and procedures; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to maintain accurate and legible records. General knowledge of water department operations, maintenance practices, and procedures. Ability to repair, install and test water meters. Ability to work independently. Ability to deal with the public tactfully and effectively. Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor under bad weather conditions. Ability to operate trucks, hand tools and power tools including jackhammer, power saw, pipe cutter, and tapping machine. Possession of a Class II driver's license is desired. Working knowledge of town roads.
