Senior Camp Counselor for 4-H Camp Overlook
This position will serve as a Senior Camp Counselor for 4-H Camp Overlook, an overnight summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations of Franklin and St. Lawrence County, located in Mountain View, New York. Senior Counselors are the primary caregivers of campers (ages 6-16) at 4-H Camp Overlook. Counselors are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out 4-H experiential hands-on activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. This position performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the 4-H Camp Overlook Director. (NOTE: This position includes overnight cabin responsibilities.)
Position Details:
This position is a full-time exempt position, Sunday through Friday. The rate for this position is $190 to $340 per week commensurate on experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and/or skill in camp program area(s). Program areas include arts and crafts, high adventure challenge, nature, outdoor learning & science education (NOLS), shooting sports, teamwork & sports recreation, and waterfront.
- Current certification and/or willingness and ability to take any required trainings for the position (example: archery instructors would need to take the NYS 4-H Shooting Sports training). Trainings would likely be prior to camp starting and may require travel to another area of the state.
- Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
- Willingness to learn and understand the development needs of youth of all ages.
- Desire, ability, and willingness to work and live in a camp community and to reside at 4-H Camp Overlook, Mountain View, NY (including overnights) the entire time 4-H Camp is in session.
- Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications (will train if necessary).
- Desire and ability to work with youth indoors and outdoors.
- Demonstrated ability to relate to one's peer group.
- Demonstrated ability to accept guidance and supervision.
- Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
- Participation in Counselor in Training program at 4-H Camp or other youth camp.
- Experience working with youth of all ages.
Position Responsibilities:
Job Duties - 95%
- Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in the cabin, within activities, and throughout camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
- Ensure campers are always supervised: during meals, free times, class times, transition times, overnight in the cabin, and all-camp activities.
- Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
- Assist campers in following the daily schedule.
- Utilize 4-H curriculum to develop lesson plans for camp classes.
- Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
- Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
- Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
- Assist in program areas such as waterfront, nature, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed.
- Cooperate and assist coordinators, directors and other counselors in the coordination of all 4-H Camp Overlook activities, including classes and all-camp activities.
- Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
- Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the camp nurse.
- Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with the camp nurse and/or camp director when appropriate.
- Monitor the condition of equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the camp director.
- Enforce all camp health and safety standards, keeping campers safe at all times.
- Represent 4-H Camp Overlook in initial contact with parents and campers on opening day of every session, making every effort to make campers and parents feel comfortable and welcome.
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
- Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule and sportsmanship.
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
- Ensure camp facilities and program areas are in good repair by communicating any fixes needed immediately to the Camp Director.
- Assist program coordinators and directors with monitoring progress of classes.
- Keep all coordinators, counselors and directors updated with pertinent information.
- Assist in the evaluation of the current camping season, and make suggestions for the next camping season.
- Perform other duties as assigned and/or reassigned as directed/required by the Camp Director.
Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%
- Attend 4-H Camp Overlook orientation/training program, and participate in staff meetings and required training events as scheduled.
- In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.
- Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
- Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
- Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
