About the Position
The County of San Luis Obispo District Attorney's Office is actively recruiting for an Accountant III to join their team!
Join our team as an Accountant III and take the lead on complex financial analysis that drives strategic decisions and strengthens our organization's future!
Accountant III is part of a career series for Accountant I, II and III. Under direction, performs professional accounting and budgetary work involved in establishing, analyzing, auditing, reconciling and maintaining financial records in support of designated programs or an assigned division or department; provides fiscal administrative support in the preparation, analysis and monitoring of the departmental annual budget and designated budgets and accounts; prepares and audits a variety of financial, statistical and budgetary reports, statements and records; and does other related work as required.

The Ideal Candidate
The Accountant III classification is the advanced-level position in the series. Incumbents work independently, provide specialized fiscal support, may supervise fiscal personnel of a large department, act as team leader and train or supervise junior staff members as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, procedures and terminology used in professional accounting work
- Principles and practices of governmental accounting
- Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
- Analysis of complex financial statements and reports
- Financial and statistical record-keeping techniques
- Preparation of financial statements and comprehensive accounting reports
- Budgeting practices regarding preparation monitoring and control
- Financial analysis and projection techniques
- Research and statistical evaluation techniques
- Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures
- Operation of a computer and assigned software
- Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to:
- Accurately perform professional accounting and budgetary work involved in preparing, analyzing, auditing, reconciling and maintaining financial records and reports
- Prepare, analyze and monitor budgets
- Provide consultation concerning assigned accounting and budgetary activities and related functions
- Reconcile various fiscal statements to assure accurate fund accounting as assigned
- Supervise, train and evaluate the performance of designated personnel as assigned by the position
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately
- Analyze financial data and prepare reports, forecasts and recommendations
- Meet schedules and timelines
- Operate standard office equipment including a computer and assigned software
Minimum Qualifications:
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, including 12 semester units or 18 quarter units of accounting and two years of experience at a level equivalent to Accountant II.

Pension Benefit and Employee Contribution Rates:
The County's pension is a defined benefit plan that provides a guaranteed monthly pension payment for life based on your time in service, wages, and other factors. The County is the primary contributor to the pension fund, but the health of the pension fund also depends on mandatory employee contributions. Employees are required to pay a percentage of their base pay towards the pension fund, ranging from 5% to 19%. This amount is deducted from your paycheck pre-tax every pay period. Healthcare Benefits and Cafeteria Contributions:
The County offers comprehensive medical coverage to you and your family, along with two dental plan options and vision coverage. All permanent employees receive a monthly employer contribution (or 'cafeteria' contribution) to help them pay for their portion of the medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums. The amount of the cafeteria contribution varies by Bargaining Unit (BU) and the extent to which employees enroll their dependents. If the cafeteria amount is greater than your selected premiums, the remainder of the cafeteria is paid out to you in your paycheck as taxable income.
