Job Summary:
The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school, field trips, and school-related activities. This position operates a school bus in compliance with all federal, state, and district regulations, maintaining a safe, orderly, and respectful environment for all passengers.
The driver conducts required pre-trip and post-trip inspections, follows assigned routes and schedules, and responds appropriately to emergencies or unexpected situations. Strong communication skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to student safety are essential to this role, as the driver serves as a representative of the district to students, parents, and the community.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be 21 years of age
- Pass a criminal background check for before hire
- Possess a valid, current Colorado Driver's License.
- Possess a Commercial driver's license (CDL), Class B and P2S endorsement.
- Possess current CPR and First aid certifications or be in training.
- Pass a DOT Physical examination
- Pass annual written and driving performance test
- Submit to and pass a Pre-Employment drug/alcohol testing and random testing throughout employment.
- Submit to a Motor Vehicle Records check annually.
- Meet insurability requirements of the Colorado School District Self Insurance Pool
REPORTS TO:
- Director of Maintenance, Operations & Transportation
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Transporting of passengers in a safe and timely manner in all weather conditions.
- Observe safe driving practices.
- Educate passengers on bus rules. Establish and maintain positive student relations.
- Assists students, as needed, in loading and unloading the bus.
- Maintain and enforce district regulations regarding student discipline. Controls noise level and settles student disputes. Monitors student riders for any medical problems. Communicates with the Transportation Director regarding student behavior that requires redirection. Student discipline referrals will be given to the Transportation Director, who will communicate with the appropriate Principal.
- Possess full knowledge of state laws regarding school bus operations, complies with all provisions of the Colorado Department of Transportation and all rules set forth by the Colorado Department of Education and Hayden Board of Education for the operation of school buses.
- Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of buses in accordance with Colorado Department of Transportation and District guidelines. IE: Checking for passengers, windows and doors are secured, defects or vandalism after each route or activity.
- Complete and submit requests for items needing repair on designated form to the mechanic. Prepares and submits necessary reports and forms promptly, neatly and accurately
- Fuel route vehicles weekly. Maintains all fluids at their proper levels. Maintain interior and exterior cleanliness of the bus at minimum once a month. Keep outside mirrors and driver's windows clean inside and outside. Clean bus bay as needed to maintain cleanliness and safety of the garage.
- Activities - Fuel and clean bus (sweep, empty trash, and wash, if necessary) upon return of trip if before 10:00 p.m., returning after 10:00 p.m. is optional to be performed the next day.
- Reports all unsafe route and bus stop conditions or hazards to the scheduler/dispatcher and /or Transportation Director.
- Verifies route times at beginning and throughout the year to maintain the accuracy of the routes. Provides detailed information to the scheduler/dispatcher for updating routes and maps. Drives bus routes according to the approved bus stop locations and time schedules as assigned.
- Performs emergency evacuation drills, at minimum, twice each school year.
- Attends all meeting and training sessions as required by the district, unless prior arrangements have been made and approved by the Transportation Director. Communication will be via email, phone or text, with reasonable response time expected.
- Willingness to drive additional trips or activities when necessary or asked.
- May be asked to be a resource for new drivers by providing training.
- Work closely with scheduler/dispatcher and district mechanic to ensure smooth and safe operations of district routes, activities and buses.
- Perform other tasks or duties as assigned.
PERSONAL SKILLS:
- Demonstrated capacity to contribute to a team working environment and collaborate with co-workers and supervisors to solve problems and create a positive work climate.
- Must demonstrate the ability to operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner and possess a general knowledge of the working parts of a bus.
- Operating knowledge of basic maintenance and emergency equipment. IE: Tire chains, flares, etc.
- Ability to interact and cooperate with the public in a cordial and helpful manner both in person and by telephone.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
- Ability to relate to and understand children.
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent Policies and building/department procedures.
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the Transportation Director and/or dispatcher.
