Description
The Clinical Assistant assists providers by working with the certified medical assistant (CMA) or provider to deliver basic patient care. Understands basic medical terminology, performs vital signs and basic patient triage, prepares patient charts, completes documentation, completes appropriate electronic health record (EHR) functions, routes phone calls, patient scheduling and re-scheduling, and documents patient requests. Acts as a scribe for the provider when needed.
Essential Functions:
- Gathers detailed information from the patients chart
- Performs and records patient vital signs, chief complaints, medication reconciliation, intake, and quality data as requested.
- Schedules patient appointments.
- Requests medical records from outside facilities and follows up on those requests
- Performs patient triage to include vital signs, medication reconciliation, and quality data.
- Communicates essential information to provider.
- Assists CMA with patient flow, documentation, and coordination of care.
- Coordinates and communicates patient concerns.
- Understand lab results-know when to report STAT/Urgent results to provider
- Scribes for the provider as requested.
- Functions as the provider's primary assistant and completes all provider requests.
- Scans and attaches all medical records to the correct visit and completes medical record requests.
- Reviews phone and email messages and returns calls/emails when needed in a timely manner including authorizations.
- Cleans rooms, work stations, and equipment as directed by manufacturers instructions for use.
- Orders, stocks and maintains medical supplies.
Other Duties:
- Drops off and picks up mail.
- Cleans wheelchairs and other equipment after patient use
- Participates in departmental and association wide informational meetings and inservices, including staff meetings, association wide forums, and seminars.
- Reviews department and association wide policies and procedures annually. Develops and maintains new policies and procedures as needed.

Abilities:
- Familiar with insurance plans, and abide by all HIPAA rules and regulations.

- This position requires knowledge of general office equipment (including the telephone system, fax machine, copy machine, computer) as well as excellent computer, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal skills, basic math skills, and the ability to exercise independent judgment.
- This position also requires knowledge of hospital equipment and programs, including all Hospital Information Systems and department specific equipment.
- Must read, write, speak, and understand English.

Physical Demands:
Exerts up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is exposed to contact with chemicals and infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, extensive close work, and extensive computer work.
Required Education and Experience:
BLS (required within 30 days of hire).
Preferred Education and Experience:
One year related experience.
Medical terminology.
Healthcare related college education (minimum 12 hours).
OSHA Exposure Category: Involves no regular exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but may require unplanned tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
This is a safety sensitive position.
