This is a highly responsible lead custodial staff position reports directly to the Custodial Supervisor 11-SES. This position requirements are to provide general cleaning to multiple sites and supply designated building areas, keeping our buildings in a clean and orderly condition, perform routine inspections and document maintenance activities. Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

  • Clean and supply designated building.
  • Inspect ALL public restrooms per shift for cleanliness and ensure it is sanitized and replenished with soap, hand towels, toilet paper, sanitary products, toilet seat covers, etc.
  • Clean mirrors wipe sinks and toilets and remove dirt, stains, and trash.
  • Floors around toilet fixtures and under urinals should be mopped a minimum of once per day during scheduled shift using disinfectant cleaner.
  • Public areas are to be continuously monitored and picked up throughout the day for removal of all liters, damp mopping spillages, emptying of trash receptacles and removal of spots and graffiti from wall and column surfaces.
  • Building entrances are to be monitored for removal of all litter, debris and trash including cigarettes butts, during the workday. Entrances should always appear neat and orderly.
  • Pick up trash as required and requested.
  • Check elevator cabs, vacuum out elevator cabs, clean off cab doors, outside call and interior cab buttons and interior walls and remove cigarette butts, paper, litter and other debris.
  • Removal of trash from trash cans/receptacles on the exterior property, replacement of trash can liners and take to dumpster for collection.
  • Clean and wash trash cans and receptacles monthly.
  • Use equipment, commercial vacuums, floor buffers and carpet cleaners.
  • Sweep, mop floors, strip, wax, vacuum and shampoo (if necessary) carpets.
  • Ensure spaces are prepared for the next day by taking out trash, tidying furniture and dusting surfaces.
  • Clean air vents and wash windows, takes inventory and assist on making orders, issues, stores and custodial supplies and equipment, responds to requests for emergency custodial needs and coordinates special work.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Report safety, fire hazards and major damages for repair, any supplies needed to supervisor.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment and ensure they are in good working order.
  • Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, gates, closing windows and setting the alarm.
  • Communicates in a courteous, professional and accurate manner in writing, orally, in person and through electronic means.
  • Ensures and maintains the collaboration and partnerships of coworkers and vendors.
  • Assess and responds with strategies for interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, inspects work to ensure it meets standards and is done safely and efficiently.
  • Attend in-service education, staff meetings and health promotion activities.
  • Incorporates ethical standards of practice into all interactions with clients and team members.
  • Use DOH policies and procedures to inform decisions; seek advice from supervisors or other authorities; utilizes research or professional organization standards or information to inform decisions.
  • Abides by the Florida Department of Health Code of Ethics.

  • Participates in professional development opportunities.
  • Able to drive a one (1) ton cargo van.
  • Responsible for performing daily inspections and servicing vehicles such as checking water, adding fuel, oil, water and air.
  • Inspect and ensures assigned vehicle is in full operational status and reports Vehicle Coordinator and Supervisor, if any repairs are needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness of interior and exterior of assigned vehicle.
  • Reports to General Services office all preventative maintenance, repairs or problems with the operation of the DOHD/COJ vehicle.
  • Completes vehicle log and vehicle inspection form daily and submits monthly to the Vehicle Coordinator.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or management, which may include inspectors' work to ensure it meets standards and is done safely and efficiently.
  • Attending meetings for information or training.
  • Perform travel as instructed, in relation to above duties and for professional development.
  • Complete computer training and other necessary tasks online.
  • Adheres to all policies, procedures and safety standards.
  • Cross training throughout department and all activities encompassed, which may include lifting equipment, boxes, etc., of at least 50 lbs.
  • Assist in on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures.
  • Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements, moves and rearranges furniture for events and restores rooms after.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Participate in the departmental Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Plan operations including other emergency related functions.
  • Evening and weekend assignments may be required and responsibilities at other DOHD sites as necessary.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge: Must be computer literate to complete training and other necessary task online. Must be able to communicate professionally both orally and electronically. Possess working knowledge of the methods, technique and materials used in custodial work.
  • Skills: Active listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Reading comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Speaking - talking to others to convey information effectively. Social perceptiveness - Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Time management - Managing one's own time to ensure all assigned tasks are completed in the assigned time. Writing - Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Service orientation - Actively looking for ways to help people. Critical thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Abilities Considerable physical activity, since physical work in a primary part (more than 70%) of job. Must have physical strength, dexterity, ability to stand and walk for long periods. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to safely operate general housekeeping equipment, to include but not limited to vacuum cleaner, mop and bucket, broom, duster, general floor care and cleaning equipment. Able to climb ladders and work from heights. Must be able to squat, twist, bend, kneel, reach overhead before and while using tools and performing custodial tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum: 1 or more years of experience as a custodial worker
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to work from 12:00pm to 9:00pm
  • Experience with working with cleaning chemicals
  • Preferred: Experience utilizing computer software
