Job Description

In this role the Custodian follows a complex schedule for the performance of custodial duties. The Custodian is required to maintain assigned areas and equipment in a clean, orderly and secure manner. The Custodian does special cleaning and semi-skilled building maintenance periodically and performs routine specialized cleaning tasks during periods of student recess. The Custodian facilitates any and all other duties as assigned by administration necessary for school operation. All applications must be submitted via Schoolspring.com in order to be accepted.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Maintains areas adjacent to buildings in clean, safe and sanitary condition.
  • Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Shovels, plows (as required by DPW), and sands walks, driveway, parking areas and steps as appropriate.
  • Reports immediately to the principal any damage to school property.
  • Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Raises the United States flag at or before 8 AM on each school day, and lowers it at or after 3:30 PM.
  • Moves, arranges, and sets up furniture and equipment for athletics, special events, and meetings.
  • Stacks, assembles and stores furniture, equipment and supplies.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Maintains on a regular schedule some motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  • Performs routine non-technical maintenance duties with the use of household hand tools.
  • Makes such minor building repairs to the best of their ability.
  • Replace some mechanical unit filters.
  • May prepare and paint interior and exterior walls.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly to the principal.
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the buildings each school day and for the determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bars are functioning properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Assumes responsibility for building security during non-school hours.
  • Requests, receives, stores and distributes supplies.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements from the principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his duties.
  • Available for call-back in emergency situations.
  • Performs immediate emergency cleanup resulting from vandalism, breakage, spilling or illness.
  • Confers with supervisors regarding care and cleaning programs at the building.
  • Participates in thorough cleaning of school plant during summer vacation, including, but not limited to, washing walls, cleaning light fixtures, thoroughly cleaning furniture, stripping and waxing floors.
  • Washes windows, walls, sinks, fountains, walls, heaters, switch plates, and vents, at least twice per year, and more frequently if necessary.
  • Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs and waxes floors.
  • Vacuum rugs and carpets.
  • Dusts, washes and polishes furniture, woodwork.
  • Replaces burnt out light bulbs.
  • Scrapes and cleans baseboards.
  • Scrub and disinfect restrooms, replenishes supplies and fills dispensers daily.
  • Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
  • Picks up trash and litter, empty and clean trash and garbage receptacles.
  • Washes cafeteria tables, and cleans eating and food preparation areas.
  • Cleans chalkboards and trays twice per week.
  • Keeps all the floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Complies with the local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  • Remains on the premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and their attendance required by the principal.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned or required.
Job Requirements

Desired Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:

  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade or GED.
  • No experience required, but some previous custodial or janitorial work is desirable.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Understand and follow a work schedule.
  • Keep basic work records and make reports.
  • Understand basic written and spoken English.
  • Ability to use household-type hand tool usage.
  • Ability to pass a written and physical exam.
  • Familiar with methods, materials and equipment used in cleaning various types of surfaces and furniture.
  • Practices basic safety practices related to custodial work.
  • Perform moderate physical labor.
  • Work effectively without close supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies.
  • Ability to read and comply with labels and OSHA safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity related to maintenance duties.
  • Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required

Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
