Director, Environment Health & Safety
Position Overview: The Director, Environment Health & Safety (EH&S) is a key leadership role responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive EHS strategy that ensures a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible workplace. This position involves overseeing all aspects of environmental health and safety programs, including regulatory compliance, risk management, and employee training initiatives. The Director will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Government Operations (GO) and Commercial Operations (CO), to align EHS objectives with organizational goals and enhance overall business performance. This role requires a strategic mindset, strong leadership capabilities, and exceptional relationship management skills to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels.
Location: Hybrid in Lynchburg, VA, Charlotte, NC, Tysons Corner, VA, or Melbourne, FL; BWXT operating facilities will be considered as alternative options.
Your Day to Day as a Director, EH&S:
- EHS Strategy and Leadership: Develops and executes the company's EHS strategy throughout the organization. Leads efforts to develop short and long-term EHS improvement strategies. Develops and supports implementation of strategic programs and initiatives that ensure the sites are compliant with safety and environmental laws and regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance and Auditing: Acts as the liaison with regulatory agencies; develops contacts and relations with officials responsible for EHS enforcement. Completes site safety program audits to ensure best practices are maintained and develops action plans to correct deficiencies. Provides senior level governance and oversight of all EHS audit programs, including internal data, mid-audit cycle support visits, and other EHS Audits.
- Risk Management and Loss Prevention: Controls significant loss exposures by recommending practical interventions that reduce injury risks and workers' compensation costs. Ensure fitness for duty requirements are appropriately established and inform return-to-work requirements. Systems, Reporting, and Technology: Prepares reporting and metrics for multiple audiences (e.g., CEO Monthly Staff Report, Quarterly Business Review Summaries, Annual BWXT Sustainability Report). Manages and administers the enterprise-wide EHS management applications to support all BWXT sites.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Operational Support: Partners with internal stakeholders to influence facility and process-related decisions that impact safety. Establishes a "safety-first" culture and partner with peers to embed this mindset into all people programs. Benchmarks best practices and makes recommendations for change. Oversees EHS due diligence and transition activities for new acquisitions and provides support for BWXT business proposals. Serves as the office safety support resource for free-standing corporate offices.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in environmental, safety, industrial hygiene, or related science. Minimum fifteen (15) years' experience in EHS with manufacturing operations. Candidate shall have demonstrated experience with increasing levels of management and leadership responsibility during their tenure. Must have demonstrable collaborative approach to management. Strong communication skills. Excellent time management skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. Proficiency with EHS software applications. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, including internationally. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Pay: $207,000 - $271,000
