Job Title

The Division of Professions and Occupations (DPO) protects consumers in the state of Colorado through licensing and regulatory enforcement for approximately 50 professions, occupations, and businesses, and the corollary regulatory environment. This work unit exists to conduct comprehensive inspections of electrical systems as installed for compliance with the National Electrical Code, Colorado Revised Statutes, and the State Electrical Board Rules.

Position: SJI 9730

This position operates independently to provide comprehensive inspections of electrical installations, including determining regulatory compliance through high-level interpretation and tailored application of industry standards and the principles of the National Electrical Code, the Colorado Revised Statutes, and the Colorado State Electrical Board Rules. The position determines solutions to a full range of electrical installation problems through the analysis of established principles, conceptual models, industry codes and standards, and the tailored application of each to fit the specific circumstance(s). Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting comprehensive inspections of electrical installations and enforcing statutory and rule compliance through the issuance of citations and the closure of work sites as required by law;
  • Planning inspections for each day based on the geographical and chronological nature of each request;
  • Ensuring the provision of practical solutions to licensees, contractors, and homeowners seeking guidance on failed inspection issues through analysis and tailored application of complex laws, rules, codes and standards;
  • Serving as a subject matter expert and resource for apprentices, electricians, contractors, homeowners, building and fire inspectors, other electrical inspectors, the board, and board staff;
  • Tracking the number of inspections being conducted and the corrections that need to be completed via the electrical and plumbing system;
  • Performing complex calculations to determine the voltage created by each individual installed solar panel to ensure the entire solar installation complies with industry standards, codes, statutes and rules;
  • Writing/completing inspection reports by documenting findings, identifying and determining necessary compliance measures, remedial requirements, etc.;
  • Reviewing literature, industry standards, industry codes, statutes and rules to identify nuanced changes in requirements, practices or procedures.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (MQs):

  • Currently licensed as a Journeyman or Master Electrician in the State of Colorado; AND
  • Four (4) years of professional* experience as a Licensed Journeyman or Master Electrician.

  • Must be currently licensed as a Journeyman or Master Electrician in the State of Colorado with NO current or previous disciplinary actions;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license;
  • Must reside in the area of the job, or be willing to relocate to one of the following counties - Position 9730 – Pitkin, Garfield or Eagle county.
  • Telecommuting/Working from home is a condition of employment for this position, and DORA provides all necessary equipment for positions with this requirement;
  • At intermittent or for extended periods of time (which may require travel or temporary short or long-term relocation) inspectors may be expected to cover or assigned to other geographic regions of the state;
  • Must successfully pass a reference check and a background check;
    • The type of background check depends on the job duties of the position, and can include a review of driving record, electrical licensure, any criminal record, and/or credit report.

  • There are no substitutions for the required professional* experience.

Preferred Qualifications/Competencies :

  • Compliance/Enforcement experience;
  • Experience developing new processes and identifying new methods to streamline existing work processes for efficiency and accuracy;
  • Five or more years of professional* experience as a Master Electrician;
  • Professional-level inspector experience in a regulatory environment;
  • Demonstrated experience working and adapting in a frequently changing environment;
  • Demonstrated experience working in a high-stress, high-profile environment managing various stakeholders and discerning hidden agendas.

  • Proficiency in the use of PC software applications including Microsoft Office (Access, Word, Excel, Google Suite, etc.).
