Environmental Health Specialist

Performs intermediate skilled technical work promoting and protecting public health through education, consultation and enforcement of Federal, State and local environmental health laws and regulations, maintaining files and records, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Health Specialist and the Environmental Health Supervisor. This position's main focus will be Onsite Wastewater. Transcripts must be submitted with the application to be considered for the position.

Job Duties:

  • Performs inspections of food handling establishments, including restaurants, food stands, drink stands, school cafeterias, nutritional sites, mobile food units, push carts, etc.
  • Performs inspections of lodging establishments, nursing homes, residential care, daycares and schools, and local confinement.
  • Performs inspections of public swimming pools and issues operation permits pursuant to state code.
  • Performs inspections of wastewater treatment systems; provides training and technical assistance as required.
  • Reviews plans and permits for new and remodeled establishments.
  • Investigates food-borne illness outbreaks and complaints related to food, lodging and institutions.
  • Teaches a National Restaurant Association-sponsored "Serve-Safe" course.
  • Performs clerical duties including processing applications for lot evaluations, septic repair permits, additions, or changes of uses, water samples, and plan reviews; assists the public with matters involving environmental health regulations.
  • Provides training to new hires.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Position Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of environmental health.
  • Thorough knowledge of State and local environmental and public health law.
  • Thorough knowledge of septic, water, food handling and related sanitation practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of well and septic system design, construction, and requirements.
  • Ability to evaluate data and to read plates and blueprints.
  • Ability to solve problems within the scope of responsibility.
  • Ability to present educational programs to staff and the public.
  • Ability to analyze technical data and conduct basic research and investigations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

Education, Experience and Supplemental Information:

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in biology, environmental health, natural science, life science, physical science, health science or related field.
  • Centralized Intern training completion within six months of hire.
  • First main authorization (onsite or food) within nine months of hire.
  • Environmental Health Law course within two years of hire.
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist certification within three years of hire.
  • Valid driver's license.
