Description
The HVAC Technician is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across multiple properties throughout Middle Georgia. This mid-level role requires independent troubleshooting, strong technical knowledge, and the ability to support multiple sites to ensure safe, efficient, and comfortable environments for staff, program participants, and customers.
In alignment with Goodwill's mission, this role also supports workforce development by helping facilitate applied learning opportunities for Helms College students enrolled in the HVACR program when feasible.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on HVAC systems, including rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, and ventilation systems
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues with minimal supervision
- Respond to service requests and emergency repair calls in a timely manner
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and preventive maintenance logs
- Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal codes and regulations
- Monitor system performance and recommend energy-efficient improvements
- Support preventative maintenance programs across retail stores, donation centers, and administrative facilities
- Coordinate with external vendors and contractors when necessary
- Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicle in proper working condition
- Promote a safe work environment and follow all organizational safety policies
- Support the mission of Helms College by helping provide applied, hands-on learning opportunities for HVAC students, as appropriate and in coordination with Facilities leadership and academic staff
- Offer guidance, coaching, and informal mentoring to students to enhance real-world skill development
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED required
Technical school, trade school, or apprenticeship certification in HVAC required
3–5 years of hands-on HVAC experience required
Experience servicing multiple commercial properties preferred
Certifications
EPA Section 608 Certification (required)
Valid driver's license with clean driving record
Additional certifications (NATE, OSHA, etc.) are a plus
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
Frequent standing, bending, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces
Ability to work in varying indoor and outdoor conditions, including extreme temperatures
Travel required between multiple Goodwill locations throughout Middle Georgia
May require occasional after-hours or weekend work for emergency repairs
