Description
Revenue Cycle Management Intern
Join a mission-driven organization and gain hands-on experience in one of the most essential areas of healthcare operations! As a Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) Intern with the DuPage County Health Department, you'll work alongside our RCM and Finance teams to support projects that directly impact patient access, reimbursement accuracy, and operational efficiency. This internship offers a unique opportunity to learn how healthcare billing, data analytics, and financial workflows come together, all while contributing to meaningful community health work.
This is a part-time internship working at a rate of $17 per hour. Hours are flexible within standard business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.). The position follows a hybrid schedule, with work performed both onsite and remotely.
Responsibilities
As an RCM Intern, you will:
- Help drive revenue cycle improvement initiatives by updating documentation, reviewing workflows, and tracking project progress
- Support the denials and appeals process by collecting documentation, monitoring cases, and preparing summaries for leadership
- Analyze billing and denial data to uncover trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement
- Assist in monitoring workqueues, researching claim issues, and helping identify root causes
- Gather and organize data for KPIs, performance metrics, and process-mapping projects
- Research industry best practices, payer requirements, and regulatory guidelines to support ongoing improvements
- Use agency systems — including the EHR, billing platforms, and reporting tools — to complete daily tasks
- Maintain strict confidentiality and protect patient privacy at all times
- Complete required onboarding and stay updated on departmental policies
This is an excellent role for someone who loves problem-solving, enjoys digging into data, and wants to learn how healthcare financial systems work behind the scenes!
