How We Serve
The Facilities and Field Services Division provides maintenance, repair, and improvement services to City-owned and leased buildings, streets, sidewalks, medians, landscaped areas, parks, public trees, graffiti removal, and City vehicles. The Division leads capital projects for City parks, City facilities, and streetscape improvements.The Division is divided into four teams: Admin; Buildings; Streets & Sidewalks; and Trees & Landscape. Our work enhances public facilities and parks as well as the public right-of-way. Staff and contracted vendors lead an array of work items that can range from citywide locations to a single worksite. Contracted vendors include maintenance and repair vendors, material suppliers, and professional consultants and licensed contractors. Our coordination of work is conducted in compliance with applicable laws, industry best practices, and regulations including the State's prevailing wage laws.
What You'll Contribute
The City of West Hollywood is seeking a Lead Maintenance Technician to join our Public Works Department. This role will serve as a lead staff member and perform advanced skilled craft, technical, and coordination functions related to the maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, parks, landscape areas, streets, streetscapes, and street/public rights-of-way, depending on the assigned section; lead and assign work to staff and contractors; coordinate and monitor work schedules; implement and assist in the development of preventive and programmed maintenance activities; operate and maintain specialized machinery, equipment, and tools; identify and troubleshoot problems; perform complex maintenance tasks and repairs; oversee contractor performance; provide customer service by investigating and resolving complaints; maintain supplies; solicit cost estimates and process invoices and purchase orders; administrative responsibilities as needed; conduct inspections and inventories; and prepare and maintain related reports and correspondence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leads, coordinates, and participates in maintenance and repair activities related to City-owned buildings, facilities, parks, landscape areas, streetscapes, and public rights-of-way; assigns and prioritizes work orders; schedules and directs staff and contractors; monitors work progress; and ensures work quality, safety compliance, and timely completion.
- Trains staff in job skills, work procedures, and safety practices; provides technical guidance; assists in resolving operational problems; evaluates work performance; and reports issues and recommendations to supervisors.
- Implements and assists in developing preventive and programmed maintenance activities; conducts inspections; identifies service and repair needs; and ensures appropriate follow-up actions are completed.
- Operates and maintains specialized tools, equipment, vehicles, and computerized maintenance management systems; ensures staff follow proper safety precautions and operating procedures.
- Coordinates contractor activities; reviews work for contract compliance; assists with project planning, scope development, cost estimating, and procurement of materials and services.
- Solicits cost estimates and processes invoices and purchase orders; administrative responsibilities as needed.
- Maintains supplies and inventories; prepares material, labor, and cost estimates; procures equipment and supplies; and maintains accurate maintenance records, reports, and correspondence.
- Performs technically complex maintenance and repair work; inspects completed work to ensure quality standards and regulatory compliance.
- Ensures compliance with safety regulations; enforces safe work practices; and monitors worksite conditions to maintain a safe environment.
- Responds to service requests and complaints; communicates with residents, businesses, and stakeholders; and may represent the Division at meetings.
- Prepares and/or reviews complex, routine and non-routine reports and analysis utilizing a variety of software; receives, sorts, and summarizes material for the preparation of reports; relays and interprets administrative decisions, policies and instructions
- Assists with emergency response, disaster operations, traffic control, and special event support, including setup, cleanup, and coordination of field operations.
NOTE: This position requires travel to various locations to complete the essential functions of the job. The current work schedule requires weekday work, but weekend work will also be scheduled on a rotating basis. Working time may require weekend shifts and may require irregular hours, various shifts, holidays, and/or on-call status. This position is not eligible for telework.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED; and,
- Four to five years of progressively responsible related experience; or,
- Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid California Driver's License
- Journeyman Certification or equivalent in a specific trade (desirable)
Retirement
The City participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement Systems (CalPERS). The retirement formula will be based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS, e.g. 2% @ 62 for New Members (average of three highest years) or 2.7% @ 55 for Classic Members (single highest year) with less than a six-month break in service from another CalPERS or CalPERS reciprocal agency. New Member employees are responsible for paying the employee contribution of one-half of the total normal cost of the plan (currently at 7.25%), as defined by CalPERS, through a payroll deduction. Classic Members are responsible for paying the employee contribution of 8% through a payroll deduction. The City does not participate in Social Security.
- $150.00 per month 457 deferred compensation contribution paid by the City (employer contribution). Employee can also make employee contributions toward the same plan. Annual limited is dictated by the IRS.
- $100.00 per month Retiree Health Savings (RHS) account contribution paid by the City (employer contribution).
Health Benefits
- The City covers the full health insurance premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents, including children under the age of 26 (effective the 1st of the month following hire date).
Leaves
- Vacation Leave:
- 80 hours - less than one year of service;
- 120 hours - 2nd through 5th years of service;
- 140 hours - 6th through 9th years of service;
- 160 hours - after 10 years of service.
- Sick Leave: 96 hours per year.
- Personal Leave: 36 hours per year (prorated by quarter).
- 11 City paid holidays.

- Telework availability ranging from 0%-50% for telework-eligible positions, subject to approval and based on ongoing operational needs of the City.

- Life insurance equal to 1.5 times your annual salary, plus $20,000, to a maximum of $120,000.
- Disability Insurance: 66 2/3% of salary to cap of $3,077 per week, after a 29-day waiting period for short-term disability.
- Optional Benefits: AFLAC, Supplemental Life Insurance, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Flexible Benefit Plan (FSA) for medical reimbursement and dependent care assistance and cash out of accrued Vacation and Administrative Leaves (if applicable).
- Tuition reimbursement at 100% of the fee schedule for the University of California (UC Tuition Resident fee) for job-related courses pre-approved by the Department Director (up to $14,934 for Fiscal Year 2025-2026) and Required Textbook reimbursement (up to $2,500 for Fiscal Year 2025-2026).
