Lead Medical Assistant - Student Health

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the Executive Director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

Student Health Services provides quality medical services to meet the diverse needs of UCSD students including primary care, urgent care, women's health, sports medicine, transgender care, behavioral health, travel care, nurses clinic and optometry. Laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray services are available on-site to facilitate the care of students. SHS provides quality medical services to meet the diverse needs of over 45,000 UCSD students (undergraduate, graduate and professional students) including primary care, urgent care, women's health, sports medicine, transgender care, behavioral health, travel care, nurses clinic, and support services such as optometry, laboratory, pharmacy and x-ray services. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS oversees the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to self examination, peer review and quality control, through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant III (Lead) functions in a lead clinical support role within Student Health Services. The Lead Medical Assistant provides advanced medical assisting services while serving as a day-to-day operational and clinical resource for Medical Assistant I/II staff. This role supports clinic efficiency, patient safety, quality of care, and standardization of practice through workflow coordination, staff guidance, training support, and real-time problem solving. The Lead Medical Assistant does not have formal supervisory authority but provides direction and leadership during assigned shifts.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Medical Assistant certification required.
  • Current BLS.
  • Working knowledge of EPIC.
  • Working knowledge of college-aged health concerns and immunization needs.
  • Three (3) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in performing medical and technical procedures, including comprehensive vital signs, injections, PPD skin testing, ear lavage, electrocardiograms, crutch fitting, sterile instrument processing, and set-up and assistance for routine and specialized medical procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge and application of medical terminology, medical equipment, and clinical workflows, with the ability to independently prepare, operate, and troubleshoot equipment used in ambulatory and specialty care settings.
  • Demonstrated expertise in sterile technique, body substance isolation, and infection prevention practices, with the ability to reinforce proper technique and compliance standards among clinical staff.
  • Advanced documentation skills, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely entry of clinical data into the electronic medical record, with working knowledge of medical records management, data integrity, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Ability to mentor and support staff development without formal supervisory authority.
  • Strong patient education skills, including the ability to explain commonly ordered laboratory tests, procedures, and health conditions (e.g., blood pressure norms, cold prevention and treatment), adapting communication to patient needs and complexity of care.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, providing clear, professional, and compassionate communication with patients, providers, and staff in person and by telephone, including in high-volume or time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to function effectively under pressure, managing variable workloads, multiple priorities, and frequent interruptions while maintaining clinical accuracy and professionalism.
  • High level of organizational and coordination skill, with the ability to prioritize diverse clinical and operational demands, support patient flow, and anticipate provider and clinic needs.
  • Proficiency with clinical and administrative technology, including computer-based scheduling systems, electronic health records, data retrieval and entry, and multi-line telephone systems.
  • Proficiency with use of standard business equipment, computer technology, online programs and software, including MS Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other electronic software and resources.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to work independently across multiple clinical settings, service lines, or specialty areas as operational needs require.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, including the ability to follow and reinforce established protocols, support interdisciplinary teams, and serve as a clinical and technical resource to Medical Assistant I/II staff.
  • Cultural competence and advocacy skills, with demonstrated experience working effectively and respectfully with diverse patient populations, promoting equitable care and clear communication.
  • Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Complete and pass test/quiz for all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD and SHW on a timely basis.
  • Ability to at all times adhere to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance, and demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. All staff members are required to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years experience as a Medical Assistant.
Special Conditions

*Must complete initial mandatory health requirements, and current clear TB test results and flu vaccination. In the absence of immunization records, titer test or blood test will be required to determine if other immunizations are needed.* TB screening required, following COEM schedule.* Flu vaccination required annually.* Must be able to work various hours and locations based on clinical or business needs, as determined by department, including evenings and weekends.* Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed or applicable, as determined by department.* Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.* Job descriptions are reviewed periodically and may be revised, if deemed necessary.* This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,239 - $75,001 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.85 - $35.92

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
