Description
This role is represented by the United Steelworkers Union. Employees in this position are required to enroll in the union within 30 days of their start date. Hourly Range: $28.62 to $40.02 USD.
The Lead Tech is personally accountable for enforcing LOTO, confined space, hot work, and all permit-based controls. This role has Stop Work Authority and must intervene whenever work is unsafe, improperly planned, or outside approved procedures.
The Lead Tech is the bridge between Maintenance Management and execution—ensuring work is properly planned, hazards are controlled, and equipment reliability is protected.
What You'll Do:
- The Lead Maintenance Tech is the first line of defense for maintenance safety.
- Enforces Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, line break, and PPE requirements without exception
- Verifies all equipment is: properly isolated, locked and tagged, zero-energy verified (try/start test) before work begins
- Ensures no confined space entry occurs without: permit, atmospheric testing, attendant, rescue plan, required PPE
- Conducts or leads pre-job briefings/JHAs
- Exercises Stop Work Authority immediately when unsafe conditions exist
- Reports and documents all incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions
Crew Leadership & Direction
- Assigns and coordinates daily maintenance work
- Directly oversees high-risk or complex jobs
- Coaches technicians on: proper repair methods, safe work execution, troubleshooting logic, documentation standards
- Sets expectations for: professionalism, housekeeping, communication, teamwork
Maintenance Execution & Reliability
- Performs and leads: preventive maintenance (PM), corrective maintenance, emergency troubleshooting
- Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and process failures
- Escalates risks to: safety, quality, production uptime
- Supports root cause analysis and defect elimination
Planning, Documentation & CMMS Discipline
- Reviews incoming work requests for: safety needs, parts and tools, job clarity
- Ensures all work is: logged in UpKeep, properly closed with notes, labor, and parts
- Supports tracking of: PM compliance, downtime, backlog health
- Provides shift handoffs and status updates
Tools, Spares & Shop Standards
- Maintains: 5S standards, clean and safe shop, organized tool control
- Identifies: critical spares, inventory gaps
- Protects company tools and equipment
- Works with: Production, HSE, Engineering, Quality
- Supports company culture, policies, and continuous improvement
What You'll Need:
- HS diploma or GED
- Deep knowledge of LOTO, confined space, PPE, and permit systems
- Ability to stop work, challenge unsafe behavior, and escalate risk
- Mechanical systems (bearings, shafts, gearboxes, conveyors)
- Electrical (motors, starters, sensors, VFD basics)
- Pneumatic & hydraulic systems
- Welding & fabrication
- Print, schematic, and OEM manual interpretation
- Computer literacy for CMMS, parts, documentation
- Can lead peers and coach other techs
- Communicates clearly with Production and Management
- 5+ years industrial maintenance experience
- Able to work shift and emergency call-outs

- Forklift / lift / rigging
- First Aid / CPR
- CMMS (UpKeep)
- RCA / CI exposure
