Medical Intern Position
The Medical Intern at an RCA facility is responsible for the provision of medically assisted treatment and limited primary care to patients with substance abuse disorder, including short term chronic disease management, medication assisted treatment, and pain management within the facility. The Medical Intern is responsible for providing quality, sufficient and appropriate services and for maintaining high professional standards. It is the responsibility of this position to model and maintain high professional conduct and standards among all medical area staff and consultants.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Must be enrolled and in good standing with a school that RCA has an Affiliation Agreement with
- Recommended for this rotation by the school
- Successfully complete onboarding process stipulated by RCA Human Resources
Specific Expectations:
- Patient care under direct supervision of the RCA Medical Director in week one
- Patient care under indirect supervision of the RCA Medical Director in week two
- Patient intake/Admissions including assessment of intoxication/withdrawal syndromes
- Follow patients longitudinally during the rotation through the detox/residential levels of care
- Learn and apply ASAM Criteria in patient care
- Provide general medical care in keeping with standards of care in Internal Medicine practice
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate patients for medical evidence of present and past opiate addiction
- Conduct routine check-ups of patients to assess their health condition and discover possible issues
- Give appropriate advice for health habits (diet, hygiene etc.) and preventative actions to promote overall health
- Prescribe and interpret appropriate laboratory studies and act on results
- Prescribe medications or drugs and provide comprehensive instructions for administration including Suboxone, Revia, etc
- Monitor patient psychotropic and other medications and make adjustments as clinically and medically necessary
- Diagnose, treat, or appropriately refer clients with medical problems that arise during the course of treatment
- Maintain appropriate medical records
- Cultivate a climate of trust and compassion for patients
- Other duties assigned by Medical Director
Education and Experience:
- Currently in school for a Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, or Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner program
