Recreation Camp Leader
Parks & Recreation Department

The Parks & Recreation Department is seeking an energetic and creative Recreation Camp Leader to help deliver engaging programs for our community. This position is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating a wide variety of recreational activities tailored to participant interests and available facilities.

Schedule:
7:00 AM - 3:30 PM or 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM, with possible standby hours

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead diverse recreational activities for after-school programs and summer camps
  • Adapt programming to meet participant needs, interests, and facility availability
  • Assist in the planning and execution of special events
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for all participants

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Plan, organize, and implement a variety of recreation programs and events.
  • Plan, assign, direct, train, motivate and evaluate Recreation Aid staff.
  • Research, recommends, receives and issues recreation equipment and is responsible for its use and maintenance.
  • Inspects facilities and equipment, area, and issues reports concerning maintenance needs.
  • Assists with interviews and recommends staff, trains Recreation Aids and volunteers. Assists with monitoring work hours reported, staff schedule and payroll time sheets.
  • Conduct registration. Accounts for funds collected.
  • Supervises and assists with the direction of Recreation Aid staff, and volunteers. Serves as acting supervisor in the absence of the designated supervisor, ensuring smooth operations and continuity of services.
  • Enforces camp and program rules and is responsible for participants' behavior and overall safety.
  • Completes incident and accident reports, assists with contacting parents and informing them of any disciplinary issues.
  • Manages and ensures the efficient setup and breakdown of camps, programs, and special events.
  • Continuedly evaluates the effectiveness of programs and events offered and recommends changes or improvements.
  • Complies with department policies.
  • Maintains attendance and activity reports for camps, programs and events; as well as any other necessary reports and forms and submits them to the supervisor.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by one (1) summer of camp recreation leadership experience or other recreation/physical education.
Current First Aid Certification. Current CPR Certification.
Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situation to customers, clients and other employees of the organization. Ability to conduct oneself in professional manner.

Skill Requirement:
Skills working with young people and securing their adherence to rules, regulations and safe work practices.

Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in writing, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
