Job Overview
Performs a variety of responsible building maintenance and room set up related to the operation and maintenance of the Recreation Center for the Town. An employee in this class performs a variety of building maintenance and preparation duties to support the operation of a community recreation center. Work includes general custodial cleaning of the building, setting up rooms for programming, supervising the public in the use of the center, enforcing policies, and general maintenance work. The employee is expected to have knowledge of the departmental operations, polices, and its services to respond to inquiries and perform the daily functions; non-routine questions or situations are referred to others. Work may subject the employee to dust, oil, and fumes and is performed in inside and outside environments. The employee is subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work may also require flexible scheduling including evening and weekend work. Specific oral and/or written instructions are available to apply to most work situations. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and the quality, timeliness, and effectiveness of work completed.
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Cleans and services rooms, halls, and stairways; sanitizes door handles.
- Sweeps, mops and scrub floors; waxes floors; vacuums carpet; buffs and waxes gym floor.
- Dusts, polishes and washes woodwork, fixtures, and furniture.
- Empties and cleans trash receptacles; disposes of trash.
- Maintains bathrooms in a sanitary condition; cleans toilets, sinks, mirrors, floors; fills tissue, towel, and soap dispensers.
- Washes walls, window, shelves, and mirrors,
- Set up rooms for classes, meetings, and special recreational events; sets up gym for volleyball, basketball, and other events; puts out and takes down and stores equipment; sets up and takes down tables and chairs; arranges furniture.
- Provides general information to program participants as needed.
- Unstop clogged toilets; changes light bulbs and fixtures; performs minor water line repairs; reports other items requiring repair.
- Performs some routine ground maintenance including raking leaves, trimming, sweeping sidewalks, and removing trash.
- Performs minor maintenance including replacing batteries, light bulbs, and HVAC filters.
- Notifies supervisor of supply needs; maintains supplies at each location in neat order.
- Locks and unlocks doors.
- May drive van with staff and program participants.
- Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of custodial building cleaning methods, equipment, and materials.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work.
- Knowledge of the room arrangements needed for various athletic and recreational events.
- Knowledge of department programs, policies, and procedures.
- Skill in the use of assigned tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
Requirements
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to perform the basic life functions of repetitive motions, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess visual acuity to recognize areas requiring cleaning and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work performed.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school and experience in custodial work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Special Requirement
- Possession of a valid NC Driver's License.

- The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
- Typical work schedule: Tuesday - Friday, 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm--Saturday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (Hours may vary depending on facility and program needs)
