Scale House Operator – Recycling Landfill

The Scale House Operator is responsible for accurately weighing, documenting, and processing inbound and outbound loads of recyclable materials and waste. This position serves as the first point of contact for customers and drivers, ensuring efficient traffic flow, accurate data entry, and compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate computerized scale systems to weigh inbound and outbound vehicles accurately
• Record and verify load information including material type, origin, destination, and customer details
• Issue scale tickets, receipts, and transaction documentation
• Collect payments when applicable and balance cash, checks, and electronic transactions
• Verify driver credentials, load authorization, and compliance with site rules
• Communicate with equipment operators, spotters, and supervisors regarding load placement and traffic flow
• Monitor site access and direct customers and haulers safely through the facility
• Maintain accurate daily logs, reports, and records required for billing and regulatory compliance
• Identify and report prohibited or nonconforming materials according to site procedures
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the scale house
• Follow all OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company safety and environmental policies
• Provide professional customer service to internal and external customers
• Perform other duties as assigned to support site operations

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Previous experience in customer service, data entry, or clerical work
• Basic computer skills and ability to learn scale software systems
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in recycling, waste management, landfill, or trucking environments
• Cash-handling experience
• Familiarity with scale operations or logistics systems
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus

Physical Demands:

• Ability to sit for extended periods with occasional standing or walking
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
• Ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly to perform job duties safely

Work Environment:

• Indoor scale house with frequent interaction with drivers and customers
• Exposure to outdoor conditions when assisting traffic or communicating with drivers
• Exposure to noise, dust, and odors associated with landfill and recycling operations
