Description
Montgomery Parks' Northern Parks Division is hiring a Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker at South Germantown Recreational Park. This is a stable, full-time position for someone who enjoys outdoor work, working with equipment, and being part of a reliable crew that maintains parks used by the community every day.
The South Germantown area includes five parks, with a large recreational park, local and conservation parks, nearly eleven miles of trails, twelve athletic fields, and six playgrounds. This team is responsible for maintaining these parks, so they are safe, clean, and welcoming for daily use, events, and recreation.
Working under the direction of a Parks Maintenance Leader, this role performs a wide range of hands-on maintenance work. Duties include operating equipment, maintaining grounds, fields, playgrounds, and trails, and supporting seasonal and special projects alongside other team members. The work is physical, varied, and essential to park operations.
This position offers steady work, clear expectations, and opportunities to build skills over time. Employees receive training, work with experienced staff, and have opportunities to develop additional equipment and maintenance skills. Schedules may include days, nights, and weekends as needed.

Examples of Important Duties
Core Areas of Responsibility
Field Operations and Equipment
- Operate riding mowers and tractors with attachments to maintain parks, ballfields, and brush areas
- Operate trucks and equipment including non-CDL truck and trailer combinations, trash trucks, dump trucks with snowplows, front end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, and related heavy equipment
- Haul materials, tools, and equipment to support daily operations and projects
- Perform routine safety inspections and basic maintenance of vehicles and equipment
Park, Athletic Field, and Facility Maintenance
- Maintain athletic fields including field layout, measuring and marking lines, aeration, overseeding, and fertilization
- Perform routine grounds maintenance and occasional custodial maintenance and minor repairs to park buildings and structures
- Install and maintain park amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fencing, and basketball equipment
Tree, Landscape, and Environmental Work
- Perform tree maintenance tasks including pruning and removal support
- Operate chainsaws, chipping equipment, and stump grinders
- Perform preventive maintenance of stormwater facilities in accordance with Department of Environmental Protection standards
- Maintain bioretention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation and weed control
Public, Event, and Program Support
- Assist with transporting supplies and setting up special events and programs
- Provide general assistance to park visitors and support park activities and events
Skills and Experience That Support Success
- Working knowledge of grounds and trail maintenance, landscaping, and basic facility and custodial work
- Ability to safely operate and inspect hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, mowers, tractors with attachments, and small trucks with trailers
- Understanding of safety practices and proper use of equipment, pesticides, and fertilizers
- Basic computer skills for standard work tasks and documentation
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and apply sound problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships
- Ability to communicate in another language is a plus
Knowledge and skills are typically acquired or further developed through on-the-job training in this job class.
Working Conditions
- Incumbent primarily works outside with a combination of office work occasionally or as assigned.
- Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps etc.).
- Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.
- An essential employee required to be on-call 24 hours for any emergencies.
- Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
- Pass Commission medical examination.
- 18 years of age.
- Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance, semi-skilled trade work (HVACR, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, carpentry).
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total two (2) years.
- Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
