Senior Typist

RESIDENCY– Candidates must have been legal residents of Livingston County for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the application. The work involves the performance of moderately difficult clerical duties involving the full-time or substantial part-time operation of a typewriter and/or computer keyboard. The work is performed under general supervision permitting the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Specific instructions may be given for new or unusual assignments. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of one or more clerical employees. Employees in this class may be assigned to work on word processing equipment to produce acceptable copy by manipulating an alphanumeric keyboard and reviewing information on a display screen. An employee in this class may be required to undergo training to develop and/or increase skills in the operation of this type of equipment. In the County service, this employee is primarily involved in overseeing a complex clerical procedure which may not involve steady or recurring supervisory responsibilities. A Senior Typist does related work as required.

Examples of Duties
  • Works from rough draft or from data which is personally developed, types accounting and financial statements, statistical tabulations and data, form letters, memoranda, vouchers, reports, requisitions and other materials;
  • Reviews accounts, reports and other documents for completeness, accuracy and conformity with established procedures;
  • Conducts routine correspondence on matters where policies and procedures are well defined;
  • Supervises and participates in the inputting, issuing and recording of applications, licenses and permits;
  • Assembles a variety of data from office records for incorporation into various reports;
  • Maintains personnel records, prepares and inputs payrolls;
  • Performs and oversees the typing, processing, indexing, sorting, recording and filing of a variety of records and reports;
  • Answers telephone, providing information to callers, taking messages and making appointments;
  • Operates copying, computing, calculating and other office machines;
  • May assign and review work of subordinates and instruct new employees in specialized clerical and keyboarding work of a unit; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS : Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; good knowledge of business arithmetic and English; skill in keyboarding at a predetermined rate of speed; ability to plan and supervise the work of others which at times may be within specified limits; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; ability to write legibly; clerical aptitude; good judgment; tact; courtesy; accuracy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment:

Training/Education - Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency diploma. - N.A.

General experience - Two years of full-time paid experience in a clerical position involving the operation of a keyboard. - Four years of full-time paid experience in a clerical position involving keyboarding.

Supervisory experience - None required. - None required.

License/ Certification - N.A. - N.A.

Other requirements - None required. - None required.

Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements. Senior Typist C in all divisions

PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT NOTICE: An individual who receives a provisional appointment must take the examination for the position title on the next occasion it is offered. In order to be eligible for a permanent appointment to the position, the provisional appointee must pass the exam and be ranked 1, 2, 3, or be tied in score with the individual ranked number 3 of those who are willing to accept appointment to the position. It should be understood that even if the provisional appointee is eligible for appointment, the employer may choose another candidate to fill the position on a permanent basis.
