La Mesa-Spring Valley School District is seeking a substitute gardener. The position is for maintaining clean, attractive, and safe facilities for students, employees, and the public. Substitute gardeners work 8.0 hours a day, generally between the hours of 6:00 AM - 4:00 PM. As a substitute employee, hours are not guaranteed and the position is not benefits eligible. All offers of employment are contingent on pre-employment clearances for: Department of Justice (CA) Fingerprints; Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Fingerprints; Tuberculosis (TB) and Physical. The District pays for pre-employment clearances for substitute employees.

Examples of Duties
The duties of a gardener include applying pest control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures and under the guidance of the IPM coordinator. Performs duties of other grounds maintenance staff and provides support to other grounds personnel in the performance of work assignments; assists with maintaining campus grounds in accordance with established standards. Performs general grounds cleanup, including picking up paper, trash and debris on grounds areas, parking lots, playgrounds, athletic fields and other assigned areas; unclogs storm drains and performs related duties as assigned. Performs various duties in maintaining grounds for events and recreational activities as assigned; performs routine work in the preparation, and dragging of athletic fields and related areas as assigned. Plants, cultivates, prunes, sprays, fertilizes and irrigates flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; hoes and pull weeds and rake leaves; edges walkways; sweeps litter from walks and driveways. Repairs small sections and areas of concrete, pavers, block wall to maintain safe and attractive grounds.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or equivalent GED and one year of experience in gardening, nursery, or grounds-maintenance work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and grounds maintenance work. Safety practices and procedures. Basic hand tools for making minor equipment repairs. Ability to meet schedules and timelines. Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair. Observe health and safety regulations. Operate equipment used in industrial maintenance. Adhere to safety practices. Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly. Utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Adapt to changing work priorities Work effectively with others; working as part of a team; and depending on work assignment, working non-standard hours and traveling between assigned work sites.
