PROJECT MANAGER
JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsible for assisting Principal Investigators (PI) and Project Leaders (PL) with managing a team of technical professionals in completing research & development projects within a set schedule, and within budget while accomplishing project objectives and tasks. Duties include dividing up and monitoring the budget for different project aspects, coordinating project team membersā efforts from existing technical teams, and setting or adjusting project schedules to accomplish milestones. The Technical Project Manager (TPM) in cooperation with the PI or PL will also advocate for additional funding, additional time, or adjusted constraints on scope when necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities
Over the course of a project, the TPM will need to communicate with staff and clients, make decisions, and monitor the progress of the project to keep it on schedule, on cost, and in scope. Important responsibilities for a TPM include:
- Decomposing contract requirements into tasks, deadlines, deliverables, and compliance matters
- Creating long- and short-term plans, including setting targets for milestones and adhering to deadlines
- Delegating tasks on the project to employees best positioned to complete them, setting deadlines, and following up with those employees
- Coordinating technical and human resources across multiple teams in a matrixed organization
- Making effective decisions when presented with multiple options for how to progress with a project
- Serving as a point of contact for teams when multiple units are assigned to the same project to ensure team actions remain in synergy
- Communicating with stakeholders, project leaders, and executives to keep the project aligned with its goals in terms of schedule, cost, and scope
- Performing quality control on the project throughout development and execution to maintain standards
- Adjusting schedules and targets on projects as requirements or financing changes
- Updating project information in various software tools (including spreadsheets, project management software, etc.)
- Assisting in preparing reporting or presentation templates compliant with contract requirements
- Proofreading, editing, and submitting technical reports and presentations
- Managing electronic project files
Mandatory Requirements: U.S. Citizen; Minimum 2 years of project management or project engineering experience; Technical experience in electronics, radio frequency systems, photonics, engineering, and/or physics; and Experience in office automation software, specifically word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, email, and electronic file management (e.g., Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, or similar such as Google Workspace)
