Definition
Under general supervision of the Senior Services Transportation Supervisor, provides transportation services for the Senior Services Department. Picks up and delivers passengers requiring transportation in a safe, timely and efficient manner. Also, provides delivery of home delivered meals to community seniors and adults with adaptive needs who are unable to attend the senior center. Operates the Department vehicles in accordance with Department and Tribal Government transportation policies, practices and procedures. Performs "light" routine vehicle maintenance duties. Places a priority on the safety of all passengers and adhering to all the Community's traffic laws. Adheres to all City and State traffic laws while driving outside the Community. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.
Distinguishing Features: The Transportation Driver I (Senior Services) differs from the Transportation Driver II and drivers in other departments by an emphasis on the special transportation needs of the Community's seniors and adults with adaptive needs requiring transportation thru the Senior Services Department's programs and locations. The Transportation Driver I is expected to provide a basic level of service assisting with the special needs of the seniors and adults with adaptive needs.

Examples of Tasks
1. Senior Services Transportation Program: Transports seniors and adults with adaptive needs to and from their homes and the Senior Services Center and elsewhere as needed and in compliance with the Department's allowable practices and procedures.
- Logs all transportation actions including passenger pick-ups and deliveries utilizing a "Trip Log" method.
- Assists by packaging and delivering home delivered meals to seniors and adults with adaptive needs unable to attend the Senior Services Center.
2. Transportation & Safety: Drives the transportation vehicles to transport passengers from their homes or the Senior Services Center to a variety of destinations in and around the Community including medical appointments and for recreational events.
- Assists passengers with entering and leaving the vehicles and ensures their safety at all times.
- Ensures all passengers, including the Driver, utilize vehicle seatbelts.
- Monitors the safety of passengers at all times during transportation including, but not limited to, the use of safety items, child safety seats and smoking prohibitions.
- Notifies the Supervisor immediately if, at any time it is believed that a passenger should not be permitted to board the vehicle for transport. Fully documents such incidents and submits in writing to the Supervisor.
- As directed by the Supervisor, may assist passengers with minor advocacy services to ensure they obtain the necessary services at the final destination.
- Transports Department information and other materials for delivery to the final destination when required and directed by supervisor, manager, or Director.
- Assists passengers at their final destination with disembarkation.
3. Vehicle Maintenance: Maintains complete vehicle maintenance check list and records and provides this information to the Supervisor to ensure vehicles undergo proper scheduled maintenance.
- Does not operate vehicles at any time if there is an unsafe condition that might imperil the passengers and driver. Reports the unsafe conditions to the Supervisor immediately.
- Notifies the Supervisor of needed and necessary repairs.
- Performs light vehicle cleaning tasks, minor repairs and minor maintenance including, but not limited to, checking oil, water and other fluid levels.
- Conducts daily inspections of vehicle interior and exterior for signs of wear or damage. Reports all damage to the Senior Services Transportation Supervisor.
- Cleans and maintains the interior and exterior of all vehicles.
- Ensures sanitization and disinfection of every vehicle after all vehicle use.
4. Other Duties: Coordinates all related record-keeping for vehicle usage and maintenance.
- Completes Vehicle Incident Report forms in cases of accident, damage or incident.
- Participates in supporting the Department's Recreation Program.
- Assists with the set-up and break down for Senior Services Center special events.
- Assists with Community wide mail outs and implementation of the Department's Communication Plan.
- Assists with various housekeeping tasks to maintain the upkeep of the senior services center.
- Assists with other department general labor requests as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, Operations Manager or Directors.
- Assists in covering the Transportation phone line as needed.
5. Training: Maintains all legal permissions to drive Community vehicles and uses all available resources to maintain currency regarding driving and vehicle safety issues.
- Attends any training opportunities relevant to transportation services as well as all program and Department staff meetings.
- Prioritizes training opportunities that focus on services to Seniors and Adult with adaptive needs.
6. Miscellaneous: Assists with meal packaging for home delivered meals. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Senior Services Transportation Supervisor or Operations Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the history, culture, customs, traditions and government of the SRPMIC.
- Knowledge of the Community's addresses and locations used by passengers.
- Knowledge of the Community and state laws, ordinances, rules and regulations concerning the standard operation of a motor vehicle in the State of Arizona.
- Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of safety procedures for transporting passengers including Seniors and adults with adaptive needs.
- Knowledge of safe food handling procedures.
- Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, staff, Community Members and the public.
- Skill operating a transportation vehicle safely and in accordance with Community and state laws and ordinances.
- Skill determining expeditious and safe transportation routes in the event of inclement weather, other traffic concerns or emergencies.
- Skill following verbal or written instructions.
- Skill using basic office and kitchen materials and products.
- Skill using the computer including MS Office and the internet.
- Ability to operate a passenger van and/or commercial vehicle.
- Ability to assist handicapped passengers.
- Ability to identify needed vehicle repairs.
- Ability to assist passengers with loading and unloading.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding passengers.
- Ability to create and maintain a vehicle usage and maintenance log.
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance including, but not limited to, checking the battery, tire pressure, oil, water and transmission fluid levels, windshield washer fluid levels, etc.
- Ability to work outdoors including excessive heat and cold.
- Ability to perform basic routine vehicle maintenance and to identify needed service, repairs and maintenance.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment and mobile telephone.
- Ability to lift and carry 30 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Graduation from High School or a GED equivalent.
- For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED within the probationary period. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
- Food Handler, CPR and First Aid certification required within 6 months of hire.
- Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.
- Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill
Special Requirements
- May be required to work outside normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License
- May be required to work in inclement weather including excessive heat and cold.
- Must be knowledgeable about special needs for seniors and adults with adaptive needs.
